USPS... bless their pea-picking hearts...

Recommended Posts

I won a bullet mold on eBay on August 14th. The item shipped from Marietta, GA on the 16th, estimated to arrive at my house on the 23rd. It arrived in Atlanta on the 19th - a distance of about a dozen miles. It was then listed as "In transit to next facility" for the next seven days... the "next facility" was Palmetto, GA, where it arrived this morning. Palmetto is about twenty miles from Atlanta... so it's traveled a whopping 35 miles in twelve days now.  If it keeps up the same pace, my math says it will arrive here in another 583 days.

its sad that things travel so far out of the way to get to you when the direct route would be more efficient , , a lot of our mail goes to duluth before getting here from iowa , - thats 2 1/2 hrs north east and back from 3 1/2 hrs south of here , even stuff from atlanta ga goes there first , from st paul an hour south

A package from just outside ST. Paul, mailed out on Friday to a destination just outside of Nashville.  It went down to Memphis first, but it DID get here today.

I don’t know why they have to send something by the circuitous routes, but it kinda’ explains why postage has increased so much in the last couple decades!

I get my meds from the VA pharmacy at Fort Harrison on the west edge of Helena. It's 14.8 straight line miles from the VA hospital to my mailbox - I can actually SEE the VA hospital from my house, yet it can sometimes take more than two weeks for a prescription to arrive. Seven or eight days is about average. All outgoing "out-of-town" Helena mail goes to Great Falls for sorting & distributing, then comes back. Since my address is East Helena, a separate town maybe 3 miles away from Helena, the package goes from the Fort Harrison post office to the Helena post office to the Great Falls post office, back to the Helena post office, then to the East Helena post office, then out to my mailbox. I could drive out there and pick it up in person, but it's more convenient to push a couple buttons on my phone and have it mailed out.

They have misplaced countless of my mails, especially during the holidays.

Where's the logic here? 2 orders on the same day from Amazon. One said 2-day Prime delivery, the other was about 2 weeks out. Both packages arrive at the USPS dist. center in NH the next day. The 2 day package usually arrives on time or a day late. The 2 week package that remember got there at the same time just sits there for over 2 weeks and is almost always late.

What is the point in just sitting on it for weeks instead of just forwarding it along with the 2 day package?

This one kills me too... I get a notice that my package will arrive early! Inevitably it is  2-3 days late!

I was curious so I did some quick research.  in 2022 there were 21.2 billion packages and 116.15 billion pieces of mail sent/delivered.  Given the volume it's amazing they don't make more mistakes.

It might not look efficient to us, but USPS, UPS, Amazon and Fedex spend a lot of money trying to figure out the best ways to find that balance between speed and the least expensive way to ship that package or piece of mail.

Misplaced or lost? Things eventually make their way to my mailbox, but sometimes it takes awhile. I sold some stuff to Blackjack Ketchum a couple years back, and his check never arrived. After about six weeks, he sent out another one, and... both checks arrived on the same day about three days later.  One of several one piece Marlin firing pins I've bought from Longhunter never got here, but he sent out a replacement. (Several years ago, but thanks again!) The first one never did arrive. A birthday card to one of my daughters with some cash in it arrived at her house, but the envelope had been opened and the cash was gone. Half a dozen items have arrived damaged over the years, but for missing stuff, that's it, I think.

I get my meds by mail from the VA.  They like Kaiser fill mail order (phone or internet) from a regional warehouse.  The time between email shipping message to mail box is 2-3 days for me.  It my change when the Reno postal shorting center moves from Reno to Sacramento next year.  They will still sort local mail in Reno.

UPS is losing its reputation super fast. Package mailed August 20 from Miami, Florida to my place in Jacksonville travelled cross country to Vernon, California facility. Then to another facility in Los Angeles, Ca. then back to Vernon which again to Los Angelas were its last reported. That was 8 days ago.  Myself, have used UPS for most shipments, no more. Worse then USPS which is really bad.

As for the USPS, the reason non-priority mail packages often sit is that they travel differently than priority mail and express packages.

Priority Mail and Express packages are usually shipped long distances as cargo on commercial airline flights. This is also how first class mail travels across the country. USPS used to have a big contract with American Airlines to transport mail across the country. No idea who USPS uses now.

Parcel post usually travels by truck. So it may sit at a distribution center for several days until enough is collected to fill the freight container that will go between two given distribution centers. Once full it goes into a mail truck trailer and starts working it's self through the system. This path is often convoluted and seldom makes sense to anyone other than the postal service.

USPS does this all the time: parcel tours the entire country and then returns. Sometimes you get absolutely lost. I don't bother sending gifts around Christmas since USPS is the worst.

A couple weeks ago I ordered a leather punch from the Walmart website. It was in Ga. They sent it by DHL. The first day tracking showed that DHL had it and it was in a distribution center. Where it sat for 9 days. After the 9 days, it started moving again and made it to Tucson in about another 4 days.

I contacted DHL through their website to as "Why?", but never got a response.

I have received pre-approved credit apps for my dog. Go figure what database they are pulling their list from. Hope they get their money back from that company. LOL
