Aguila Small Pistol Primers in Race Guns?

Tall John

Recommended Posts

Anybody successfully and dependably using Aguila SPP’s in lite 38/357 cowboy loads without FTF’s? In your race guns with lightened hammer springs?  Mine are finnicky with CCI’s so I’ve been sticking with Federals but this is a good buy!

Midsouth has them for $319 delivered! (Free shipping & free hazmat). Makes them about $65 /thousand with tax

With the climate on Primers the last couple of years.

I would rather have a stiffer spring and know the firearm was going to go bang.

I know people using Aguilla primers with no problems.

Don't know what kind of springs are in their firearms.

One way to find out for sure.  Springs are Cheap.

Especially if you are using Rugers.  Coil springs are easy to shim.

You can buy coil springs for Rutgers in one pound increments. Why in the world would you put shims washers in there?

You are in Alaska.  If you were going to a match tomorrow and needed a new spring would it arrive by tomorrow?  How much would the spring and shipping cost?  Washers are available pretty much everywhere and cheap.  I know lots of people that shoot Federals.  If they can't get any they use washers to beef up the spring rate a bit until they can get some more Federals.  Main reason - convenience.

Ive got a set of NMV Bisleys that the previous owner used fishing snaps in his springs!  Lots of those in Alaska!

I would dig through my box of spare parts and pull out a new spring and install it. Am I the only person in the world that keeps spare parts? I avoid Mickey Mouse repairs.

Skimming a spring isn't a MM repair ;)

Many gun spring makers include such shims for fine tuning the spring pre-load tension.

You know very well that the strength of a coil spring is controlled by the diameter of the wire used to wind the spring. 0.030” wire produces a stronger spring than 0.025” wire. Shimming the spring does not make it stronger. You use as many coils as possible without getting coil bind when compressed. That way each coil does a small amount of work. When you clip a spring short and make the length up with shims each coil has to do more work and will fatigue faster. This is why custom spring makers offer springs for a specific firearm wound from half a dozen different wire diameters.

Way more at play than just wire diameter ;)

Heat treatment and coil spacing is a big part of it.

Alloy and heat treatment are selected to best suit the application. Coil spacing is set by using as many coils as possible without getting coil bind when fully compressed. The wire diameter is used to achieve the strength of the spring. Preload can be used to control the harmonics.

I did not insult any of you guys. I only mentioned that you can easily purchase springs in different strengths specifically for various firearms. And yes I do have some limited education in the application of springs. Not that it matters. All you have to do is purchase an assortment pack of pre made coil springs for your 1911 or Ruger single action from Wolff Springs and you will find each strength of spring is a different thickness. The stronger the spring, the thicker the wire. It really is that simple.
