Chicago kidd Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I’m looking for a good starting load for 38 special. I have trail boss - win 231 - and tight group what will work best.

J.S. Sooner, SASS #73526 Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I use 3.25g Trail boss with 125.
Leroy Luck Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 There’s titegroup listed in this for reference hodgdon_2002_blackpowder_reloaders_manual.pdf

Dilli GaHoot Galoot Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 How much Trail Boss? You might be better off selling it and using the cash to buy a bunch of some other, more available, powder
Rance - SASS # 54090 Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I also reload with Trail Boss.. I load 3.0 for pistols with 125 grain TC.. and 3.6 grains for rifle with 125 grain TC
Wild Eagle Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 3.2 grains of TiteGroup works well for a cowboy load. I could never get W231/HP-38 to burn clean enough at cowboy load pressures. I tried up to 3.8 grain and it was still too dirty. Makes a nice full power load though. I have never used Trail Boss.
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 I use 3.0 gr of Titegroup behind a 125 gr TC bullet. Works great for pistols and rifle. No problems with knockdown targets or the Texas Star.
Go West Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 Lyman shows OAL @ 1.44" with a 125 RN bullet: Tite Group 2.9 @ 797 231 3.9 @ 733 Clays 2.9 @ 800 Bullseye 3.2 @ 763 If you lengthen OAL, the pressure will be reduced somewhat. Load to what suits your rifle, the pistol will take any of them. I recommend having several reloading manuals such as the Cast Bullet Handbook, Lee and Lyman manuals. I also like the Load Books which feature one caliber, many bullets and powders. Powder companies have data online.
Rye Miles #13621 Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 3.5 grs of TiteGroup with a 125 grain bullet for pistol and rifle.
Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 I use 3.2 grains of Titegroup with my wife's 105's, my 125's for the pistol, my 140's for the rifle (also my knockdown load for the pistol) and my 158's for the rifle (my, I am not really asking knockdown loads) I still use magnum SPP as that is what I have the most of, though I have never noticed a difference anyway. Regards Gateway Kid
