Silica content in poly or Hi-Tek bullets?

Hello, the fire,

I see this brought up online a couple of times now.  Bad thing?

I checked my boxes of powder coating and saw no labeling that mentioned it.

Is some higher in silica?

Just asking.

Most bullet manufacturers use the HI-Tek coating,  go to the Hi-Tek website and look at the MSDS sheet.  Companies that are using a proprietary coating you would have to contact individually.

I know it can be a problem for sandblasters, but it seems unlikely that it would cause a problem for us shooting.  I just can't imagine that we would be exposed to enough from the bullet coating being exploded off 30 or more feet away to cause health issues.

There is another issue besides health considerations. If there is silica in the coating, it will work to wear down the rifling pretty quickly. Which is why I think that there is probably NO silica.

I recommend reading the Castboolits forum. The Harbor Freight PC supposedly had a ton of silica in certain colors and was not great for the gun, and it didn't do so well for bullets. I use Eastwood Powders, which I purchased on Amazon.

The Hi-Tek Polymer contains NO silica. Some of the products meant to “powder coat” tools and other metals

can contain large amounts of silica.

Out of curiosity why are you asking?

Just wondering about rifling wear.  Not a health question.

If you are concerned about breathing in silica one solution is to NOT MISS.

If you miss you may kick up dust and dirt that contains considerable silica.

A clean match is good for your health!

I think you forgot the smiley face, but to continue that thought:

Hitting the target kicks up MORE dust as the multiple fragments hit the grassless bare ground below.  If you miss it kicks up less and it is further away. :) (note smiley)

So...one atom bomb kicks up less dust then a cluster bomb...?

Hmmmm...

I believe I remember something about Ford Blue from Harbor Freight being bad that way
