I tend to shy away from going into military bases. Call me paranoid, but I fear that somehow my name will be flagged and I will be brought to task for some clerical error that occurred many years ago. I will then be taken into custody and sent back to Great Lakes Naval base to be reintroduced to the modern Navy and then sent to the fleet as the oldest deck ape on record.

Although it is up to the local commanders discretion, pretty much all military bases have some sort of firearms registration requirement. Given that my normal load out for a big match is 14 firearms... and to register them, they want to see them. You can't just hand them a list of what you are bringing on to the base. I live near and work on Ft. Campbell KY. I do not use the available post ranges or bring any firearms on base. It's just not worth it.

When I was in the Navy, all firearms were required to be registered and kept in the base armory. You had to check them in and out during normal business hours and were escorted to/from the main gate. Process was a real PITA.

 

On some bases if you were senior enlisted or an officer and lived in base housing you could put in a special request to keep them in your residence. They had to be stored in an approved safe and were subject to inspection at any time.

If I can't stay on the range and the range doesn't have a recommended or partnered campground, I will try to find the closest state or national park.

 

If no state or national park, I'll start looking for local campgrounds.

 

I haven't found a lot of military campgrounds near the shoots I've attended.

I've looked into it.  Far too much hassle. 

The one base I called: list of all firearms, all firearms are then checked into the armory. Four rifles, eight revolvers, three shotguns, and ammo.  Plus the one that's always loaded.

That was for an Air Force base. Navy and Marine bases won't let you bring any firearms on base (unless you are living on the base, then there are exceptions).

The military Family Campgrounds aren't really an option for anyone going cross country to a Cowboy match.

Wish we could, but that is beyond my pay grade.

I wonder why the various governments paid me to carry loaded firearms of almost every non-nuclear type  plus explosives, sharp and / or blunt objects, and provided the training to use them and now they get all sweaty over a little pocket knife.

 

They don't seem to realize that I AM A DEADLY WEAPON.

 

I never go into a place without making sure I know where the potential weapons are.  Simple things like coffee cups, glass sugar dispensers, table ware, furniture, Napkin holders, and even some rigid folding menus, salt and pepper shakers, back packs, scarves, bandanas, sweaters, beer mugs, hot coffee in cups, walkers, canes, crutches ("Excuse me Ma'am, I need to beat this jackass to death, but I'll give your weapon back in a moment or two.) and literally dozens or scores or more "deadly weapons".

 

Panic, idiocy, and lack of reality reign across our country.

It sounds like at least as much hassle as bringing firearms into California or New Jersey or Illinois. No thanks.
