APP shotshells?

Crusty Knees

I know we CAN load APP in shotshells.  But, does anyone do it?

Is it frowned on by other Frontier Cartridge shooters?

It's getting to be a question of economics.  I can buy a whole case of APP for the cost of 5 lbs of BP.

I know BP would be great for night shoots, but we don't have them around here.

Well, I shoot Frontiersman, not Frontier Cartridge but...

I use both. Real black is nearly $10.00/lb cheaper than APP for me (I have to order either) so I just use whatever I have the most of. If I use real black I make sure to put some lube on the bottom of my cushion wad. If I'm loading APP I don't worry about it.

I load brass shotshells and every shell gets a LPP, a 7/8ths oz sized scoop of whatever powder, a nitro card, a cushion wad, a 7/8ths oz scoop of shot, and an overshot card.

Shoot APP in cartridges and shot shells all the time.

My load for monthly matches is.

Primer of choice

STS or Gun Club hull

CB0178-12 wad

35 grains by weight (3 cc) of 3F APP or Shooters World Black. Don't bother with 2F app is it too coarse and does not meter well.

7/8 oz of shot.

As long as I do my part it works every time.

You can leave your shotgun uncleaned for days without APP residue causing rust.  Not a good powder for a night shoot and more Smokey than real black.

But, does anyone do it?  Yes sir.  I use APP in shot shells every weekend.

Is it frowned on by other Frontier Cartridge shooters?  Not by myself or any of the other folks I have shot with.

Using APP 3FG was an easy transition for me.  I use the same MEC press as I do for smokeless.   You can use plastic wads, and once fired hulls donated by your Pards who don't reload shotgun shells.  For economy, I buy multiple cases of APP once a year from @Bullets By Scarlett to get the discount price.  As others have said, I also recommend 3FG for shotgun, meters well in the MEC.  The load above well get you going.  I use Winchester AA HS hulls and Cheddite primers, CB0175-12 Wad with 7/8oz of #8 shot and CB0118-12 with 1oz of shot, both with 3.0cc's of APP 3FG.  APP also cleans up very easy.

Good luck!

I use APP in shot shells because it creates a lot of smoke.  I bought a case of it and it really slowed me down on pistols and rifle.  So now I use it the shotgun because the extra smoke isn't a problem with the shotgun.  I use FFF with the rifle and pistols because the smoke generated by real BP isn't nearly as dense as the APP smoke.

Hey CRUSTY!!

You Betcher Bottom Dollar!!  I shoot ALL BRASS Magtech 12Ga.  I load with 40Gr 2F APP, a Ballistic Products Spitfire plastic wad with a one ounce cup and an ounce of shot.  No extra wads/cushions/spacers.  Cap 'em off with two Over Shot cards.  Takes down any popper fair hit (you DO have to hit the thing).  Go for it.

Been shooting APP for the past 8 or 10 years.  Order it from "Bullets by Scarlett" and have it delivered to your front door you betcha.

I cut the crimp folds off of AA hulls that are splitting at the folds. Size the hulls in the Mec super sizer. Use a 7/8 oz charge bar with a #36 bushing. Drops about 33grs by weight of both FFg and FFFg of APP. I use two nitro cards, one 1/2” fiber wad, 7/8oz shot, an overshot card and roll crimp it.

I do the fiber wads because it’s easier to clean than the melted plastic that accumulates in the barrel. But to each their own.
