Winchester 1886 .410?

I know it can be done with the Winchester 1894, they actually make one.   But would it be theoretically possible for someone to make a .410 shotgun out of the Winchester 1886?  My mind thinks it would be.   I doubt anyone ever will, and I am not looking to have one custom modified, it was just a random pondering.

For that matter, I suppose it could be asked of the Marlin that can handle the .45-70 or .30-30, or any other lever/pump gun that could do so.

It seems to me that any gun that could handle a 45/70 - over all length 2.55 inches - could work with a two and a half inch 410.

So obviously an 1886 Winchester would. Also an 1895 Marlin.

Interesting question. My grandpa started deer hunting by shooting .45 Colt from a single shot .410. PLEASE, save your opinions on it. Poor folks doing what they had to do to survive. b

So, the .410 is smaller than .45-70. A chamber sleeve, maybe? I'll have to measure the rim diameters to see if the bolt might be compatible.

I figure at the very least, it'd require a rebarrel and perhaps a different bolt.

Might be easier to just go with a smoothbore .45-70...

Grandpa said with enough money and a big enough hammer you can do anything, so yes.

Henry makes one on their .45-70 frame.
Caveat: At least in the Henry, it'll handle the shorter shells only.

Three inch .410s jam it and requires disassembly to clear.

I have loaded, cycled, fired, and ejected 2.5” 410 rounds through a Marlin 1895 in 45-70.

One of those curiosities that crossed my mind so I tried it. It worked as well as I’d hoped. Have felt no need to answer that question again.

I thought I asked this earlier, but I guess I forgot to submit it.  Silly me

You did post it earlier. You posted in the Saloon (ACS). Then 2 hours later you reposted here on the wire. The powers that be moved your Saloon (ACS) post over here. That don't really make sense, because your question doesn't appear to have anything to do with cowboy shooting. And everything to do with asking weird ass questions in a Saloon (ACS).

Several years ago I told someone the I couldn't see a use for the Win 94 in 410.   He told me there were some people That were using Win 375 Big Bore with 410 slugs for deer hunting.  They were from a shotgun only area.   Never tried but the idea kind of made sense but sounds better than running a 410 thru a 45/70            GW

Said the king of screwball non-shooting posts.

You may find this interesting.   I wrote to the folks at Chiappa and asked them if they'd ever consider marketing an otherwise standard 86 in .45-70 but smoothbore for shotshells.  They thanked me for my suggestion, and said they would be forwarding it to the design team.

We'll see what happens.
