Texita Draw SASS#77940
Is anyone loading the cowboy special 45 on an SDB. How do you hammer it set up? My plans are to use: 45 colt shell plate and resizing die and locator pins 45 ACP powder funnel, bullet seat and crimp die. Will this work? Also would appreciate your favorite recipe. I plan to use 160 LRNF but have 180 and 200 as well. Thanks in advance.
Leroy Luck
I load on a 650 but here’s what I use. 45 colt shell place, station 1 locator and the brass pins. 45 colt sizing die. 45ACP powder funnel 45ACP seating die 45 auto rim Redding profile crimp die My favorite load is a 180gr bullet with 3.5 grs of titegroup. But have used the same load with a 160 gr.
Colorado Coffinmaker
The 45 ACP crimp die is NOT optimal for C45S cases. You really want a nice roll crimp for optimum burn. I strongly second Leroy Luck for the Redding 45 Auto Rim Profile Crimp die. It will give you a nice tight roll crimp.
Abilene Slim SASS 81783
OP says he’s using an SDB. I thought all dies were proprietary on them, so a Redding die wouldn’t work? 1

Beyond that I don't know enough about the SDB to know if a 45 roll crimp die exists.
Eyesa Horg
Been loading C45 for quite awhile on my SDB. 45C shell plate, 45C size die, 45C powder funnel (same as acp), 45acp seat die, shortened 45C crimp die. An acp die will taper crimp, not roll crimp.
Colorado Coffinmaker
Well heck. I'm actually in the same boat as Idaho. I've never used an SDB. In fact, I've never even seen one up close and personal. With the dies being proprietary for the press, the next best (perhaps only solution) would be modifying a DILLON SDB 45 Colt crimp die. A CAVEAT: a 45 ACP die will work. Just understand the "taper" crimp is not optimal and will not work worth beans if one is going to use C45S in rifles (as I do).

Eyesa Horg
16 minutes ago, Texita Draw SASS#77940 said: What would “modify a 45C crimp die” include? I used a bench belt sander. Used a pipe cutter to make a line around it to sand/grind to. Then a Dremel to put a taper back on the mouth and polished . Send me a PM to remind me to measure it! I believe it was @Ripsaw that gave me the info. Just found his PM : I just took the 45 Colt crimp die (the "insert" used in station 4 of the SD press) and using a belt sander, made it the same length as a 45 ACP insert. Be sure to grind down the bottom of the die, so the crimp shoulder inside the die is moved closer to the bottom of the die. I also used a Dremel with a small grinding stone to taper the entrance to the die a bit so it wouldn't hang up on a round going into the die at the crimp station. Then, just use the station 4 adjustment threaded insert to control the amount of crimp. Edited August 5 by Eyesa Horg Added text 1
Choctaw Jack
I don't remember what dies use in my 550 and I'm not able to get to it right now, but I use 3.9 grains of Clay Dot, Federal #150 or 155 primers, and a 160 grain RN cast from a Lee mold and powder coated by me. A firm roll crimp helps keep this load burning a little cleaner, and it travels at 615 to 620 fps from a 5 1/2 inch barrel . Practically zero recoil and takes down knockdowns with no problem.
