Well I was probably never going to buy a Ford anyway but now it's for sure I won't!

But it sounds like other people's Fords will be ratting you out!

Look before you leap......  This is from a respected automotive publication The Drive

UPDATE 7/31/2024 @ 3:30p ET: After publication, Ford reached out with a statement to clarify that the idea “is specific for application in law enforcement vehicles, such as the Ford Police Interceptor, and it’s a system that would automate a capability that law enforcement already have in use today, except this would utilize the built-in system and sensors in the vehicle. This patent does not state that driving data from customers’ vehicles would be shared with law enforcement, which is what some media have incorrectly reported. And note, patent applications are intended to protect new ideas but aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.”

That said, the document does leave the door open for the technology to be applied to non-police vehicles “operated by various types of agencies,” including ambulances, government fleets, and private security cars. The rest of the story continues below.

The application, which arrives to us by way of Motor Authority, contains a flowchart on page six explaining the logic that would govern the system. As illustrated, a vehicle would constantly be gathering speed data of surrounding traffic, using radar or lidar. If a particular car is determined to exceed a “threshold speed limit” (whether this would be a posted legal limit or otherwise isn’t decided), it would then switch the camera on and begin recording. It would also “determine one or more identifying features of the second vehicle,” to generate a record that may help authorities find it. From there, the data would be sent to additional connected monitoring devices and/or the police, and it’s up to the latter to determine whether to pursue the offending speeder or not.

Someone did that. Return mail had a picture of handcuffs.

BW, by a weird twist of fate every one of your pictures contain a ford body. Not so?

Imis

While this is absolutely correct, all but one of those vehicles is powered by Chevrolet and the one using Ford power is mounted on CORVETTE suspension!!  :FlagAm:

Years ago I read a Sci-Fi book that told of people’s cars notifying the police and printing out a ticket for you as you drive. After a certain number of infractions the car would take over and drive you to a police station.

I could see that happening in a few years.

Thank you for the info and clarification @Calamity Kris :)

Ask your farming friends about their John Deere tractors.  They collect all sorts of information.  John Deere is said to make more money selling this info than they do building tractors.  Hopefully, that's an exaggeration, but today you never know.

In 1985 Illinois passed a law mandating seat belt use, but said Law Enforcement could not pull you over for just that. Today, you will usually be pulled over and ticketed for Seat Belt violation. Once something is available, Big Government cannot be trusted to NOT use it.

Very easy to defeat. Just cut the cable going to the antenna. You will also have to give up SYNC, OnStar, Uconnect, Safety Connect, or what ever your cars manufacturer calls their system.

Do this and the car has no way to phone home.

Step one: Create the method for government control.

Step two: Patent it.

Step three: Lobby for legislation requiring it.

And step four license the feature to state and local communities for a cut of the profits as is already done with traffic cams.

This can pretty much already be done with any car that has a GPS device in it - e.g., your phone.

I keep the GPS feature on my phone turned off and disabled!

There are work arounds to defeat the snooping features in your vehicles’ electronic systems.

Insurance companies already leverage this tech to allow 'safe' drivers to save on their car insurance

Yes they do but it's your choice to use it or not. I refused it from my insurance company.

Same thing happened in Florida.

I do notice that the no driving while using a cell phone law has not graduated to that unfortunately...I guess it's not as cost effective as speeding tickets since the fine is so small.

They can keep the self-reporting vehicles so far as I'm concerned.
