Tomorrow I Unretire

Going back to the same company that let me go about a year and a half ago.  Out of the blue I got a text from the general manager last Wednesday asking if I might be interested.  Went down Thursday to chat with him.  The QA guy is swamped with new paperwork requirements for a company that makes parts for satellites.  LOTS of supporting paperwork required. 

 

The extra income will be nice.  Let us replace a few things, pay down the car loan faster, buy a couple of revolvers (see what the wife likes - probably a Taurus 605), and maybe a semi-auto.  She really liked her Beretta 92FS and her Tomcat.  Plus, it will add months of  "contributions" to my Social Security, which will increase my monthly SSI income.  

I figure that I'll be good for about 3 years.  Especially as I won't be on the floor, contorting myself to take measurements in the machines.

Good luck Joe, good move! Hey I'm 77 and still work part time. Of course I'm self employed and I can name my hours and schedule. Like I said it's part time! I still enjoy tuning pianos and the money is great fro the time I put in!

I've sometimes wanted to go back to work, but the education taxes for making more money would out weigh the income by thousands. Ellie made 5K driving a special needs bus a few years ago, cost us 6K in increased Ed taxes plus all the usual taxes!

Good luck with that. I unretired three times, each lasting less time than the last. I finally figured out that I was not willing to play their silly games and put up with needless BS.

Yeah, taxes.  I'm figuring that I'll go with zero deductions and have an extra $50 taken out each check for Feds and $20 for State.  Right now neither one of us has taxes taken out of our Social Security - which has worked out well.

I don't even know what that's like and it's been 46 years since I left the Corps.  I just got used to getting up around 0400 hours and never bothered to change my biological clock.

Love my Sig P320 XCompact and Sig P365 XMacro. both have Romeo optics and are very accurate.

yeah, I get up between 0300 and 0400 every day but only because a young puppy makes me. But then I go back to bed and hope he goes back to sleep as well.

Best of luck to you Joe. I retired 3 times. Each time called back with offers I couldn't refuse. In fact one contract was signed were if job finished early I would still receive paycheck for 6 more months. We finished early.

A couple of years ago Mrs. Lose re retired and since then life hasn’t been the same. I used to step out of the shop after doing some reloading or cleaning and working on a gun and fire a few shots into the bank along the creek, she doesn’t like that at all. Now that she’s retired again she likes to keep track of what I’m working on in the shop and she’s got this thing about gun carts, especially ones that I give away for raffles. I haven’t driven into Escondido to my favorite eggs Benedict breakfast place in well over a year now because my bowl of fruit and a piece of avocado toast is the breakfast staple now and omelettes on the weekends. It’s always been omelets on the weekend even when she was employed but I sure miss my eggs Benedict. I’ve tried to get her to un retire again on numerous occasions but sadly she won’t fall for it.

I'm far too busy to unretire.
I still service a few long-time clients, but that is rare now.

 

Shooting SASS is too much of a PITA now (distance and expense), so I shoot weekly with my lodge and Shrine brothers instead.
My new range allows anything at all, up to but not including 50 BMG, so all my SASS guns are welcome.

 

As for piano tuning... (to me) this is a labor of love, and SO far removed from a time card and cranial-rectal management.
We retired with no bills, so we are comfortable.
Nearly all of my IBM pension is deducted for state and fed taxes so I don't have to pay quarterlies.
We live modestly and quite well on SS.

I hope that it suits your needs and gives you satisfaction. Just remember, if it doesn't...you were invited to rejoin the company that let you go before...you owe them nothing beyond doing the best job you can do for the money. If it isn't for you, just walk away with no regrets.

I suspect you will enjoy unretirement.  I retired for 6 months then took a part time gig for 6 years, service to the Conservation District and my neighbors.  I might still be doing it without Govt. / BLM interference.  Didn't need the money and it wasn't worth the fight.   Best of luck and have fun!

best of luck , i think you will find it to be far more relaxed than when you exited - i did , i retired at 62 , i got bored , i went back at 63 and worked till i was 70 [or just shy of it] the added income was a benefit but the interaction with people was what was great - even the bad days , so when i finally retired for real ive work4ed at our local gun club part time for the same reasons , not the money - the people and interaction , so many really great folks that i enjoy every day i work , only a day or so from time to time mostly but very enjoyable , something about knowing you can just pick up your toys and go home that gives you a new purpose and outlook on life and the job ,

Find her an away from home hobby, like volunteering at some charity or maybe at a library.

Well, we can squeak by on Social Security, but any unexpected expense puts us on rice, beans, and oatmeal for a while.  The extra will be nice.  

I figure two and a half or three years will give us a little bit of a cushion and increase my SSI noticably.

As mind numbing as I remember it.  Going over the bubble drawing and comparing it to the  inspection form to make sure everything was entered correctly e.g. a feature that is in Zone C3 not being entered as being in Zone D4, or something that's supposed to be 0.250 being called out as .0250, then comparing the data entered with what the print called for.

And there were just enough changes in the forms to make me have to take my time and make sure I got it right.

Went by quickly.  About 10 fewer employees then when I was let go.  There were only 4 people the same, outside management.  Some of that was a department was cut - the customer that it was dedicated to wanted to renew the contract at a 20 year old price.
