Using HP-38/W231 for "cowboy" 12 gage reloads?

Have any of you tried using HP-38/W231 for 12 gage reloads?  If so, how did it work?  Were you able to replicate the Winchester Low Noise Low Recoil loads?  Shotgun powder has been hard to find locally and I have quite a bit of HP-38.

This was in response to this same question a while back.

"I've emailed Winchester and asked them about using 231 for shotshell. The reply was a straight forward "It is not suitable for shotshell reloading." They didn't elaborate on why just a plain "not suitable." I have enough 231 for about 16,000 .45 s. I now have friends! A bright side to everything."

(I was not the emailer to Winchester.  This is a copy of a post on a shotgun loading website.)

Generally when there is NO loading data for what you are trying to do that is a pretty good indication it won't work.

I kind of figured that would be the case, but I had to ask.  I tried to search for it, but didn't have any luck.  They just recently published shotgun data for TiteGroup/ HighGun so maybe they'll work something up for HP-38.  I can always use it for 9MM, 40, 45ACP loads.  I'm not in a bind yet as I still have a fair bit of Red Dot/Promo, and Clays.  But these days it pays to think ahead about reloading supplies.  I've been using Clean Shot for my practice rounds, but have to load it a little hotter than I'd like to get it to burn clean.  Thanks for the quick response.

Hodgdon's Perfect Pattern shotgun powder is still available.  Natchezss.com shows it available in 8-lb jugs.  I load 7/8 oz loads with it using published reloading data.  It may still be available when you exhaust your other supplies.

Update: Alliant Extra-Lite is available in 8-lb jugs from a couple of online merchants.  This is my favorite powder for 7/8 oz loads.

I've been using Perfect Pattern for a couple of months now and I'm very pleased with it. I've loaded everything from 1 1/8oz down to 7/8oz. I am currently loading 7/8oz. shot with 9.5 gr. Perfect Pattern, it works great and I think it feels comparable to Winchester LNLR shells. I can load 5,894 shells from an 8lb jug which make it pretty economical. I have found that to get a good crimp I need to drop down a wad size for whatever load I'm using. I use a 3/4oz. wad for a 7/8oz. load, a 7/8oz. wad for a 1oz. load and a 1oz. wad for a 1 1/8oz. load.

Well, I would do that if I could just walk into a local gun store and buy whatever I wanted, but I can't.  Haven't seen clays or 700x on the shelf in at least two years, probably three.  Red Dot shows up once in a while, but you better be quick to get it.  Found a couple of pounds of Clay Dot about two years ago and bought it, but it's long gone.  So far I have not resorted to buying from the big box online retailers because I like having local gun shops around.  They won't be around if we don't buy from them.  I will probably try to trade the HP-38 for some Red Dot, Promo, Clays, 700x or even some Nitro 100.  Just thought that someone here may have already worked up a 12 gage load for it.  I'm loading all of my practice 12 gage with Clean Shot and could shoot it in matches if I need to, it's just a little dirty at the low pressures we use.

I do not know where you are from but Clays has not been available for years and the other two are SCARCE.  You cannot just walk into a reloading supply store and have your choice of powders.   Most of the time there is little if any choice.
