If you could fly...... ?

Recommended Posts

If you could fly....... ya know, levitate and zoom around in the air by yeowndangself,....  and you had no other super powers

to protect your skin, eyes, etc......... HOW FAST could a feller fly without burning up his skin from friction burns, etc.....or how

fast could he fly without having some protective clothing?   I figured about 50 mph for short periods of time.

If you could choose a super power, what would it be?

I think I would want to have the ability to become invisible.   No matter what you did, good or bad, nobody would know

you were involved.   Just imagine the places you could go, things you could see, scare the heck out of your enemies, etc.....

The eyes are my limiting factor in the hot and humid summer.  The sunburn would factor in before air friction at 50mph on the skin.  Cruising at 80mph or shorter burst of 120mph don't seem to affect skin.  The windchill may feel good.  The dry cold winter air is a different beast.  How long could you be outside without skin protection regardless of flight status?  A short burst at 80mph can be painful.  Cruising at 20mph can become painful.

This webcomic - Grrl Power. Max - gold skin, purple hair - has super powers. She's like Superman - can fly and is invulnerable. Sydney - fatigues and eye patch - found the little glowing orbs. And they give her superpowers. Each one gives her a different power, but only when she's holding it.

The two she is holding in this strip - one gives her flight and the other is a force field. So the artist took your thought into consideration.

I had to redact her comment in that first frame. Sydney has a potty mouth at times.

If I could fly I would dress as The Rocketeer. I think 200mph max would be plenty fast enough, but I would also want the ability to fly slow and hover.

Now, as for super power…I already can detect BS so…

Perfect health,  perfect eyesight, perfect weight and fast healing powers if injured. That’s good enough.

Oh, and since The Rocketeer carried a 1911 .45 Colt I would have a sidearm, but probably something more like a S&W 327 TRR8. Can’t have brass dropping on the citizens, now can we? :D

I have been 150+ mph on a motorcycle in nothing more than boots, jeans, and a T-shirt!!  I was wearing eye protection. I was not wearing a helmet.

My average speed was more like 120, but I rode for nearly an hour at those speeds. It was an emergency and I had to cover more than a hundred miles!

I suffered no ill effects from sun or wind. I don’t recall what the weather was like that day, but it was early July and my mom had just had an accident and was being taken to the hospital. They gave me no indication as to her condition.

I was fairly used to riding in those days and was heavily tanned and very healthy.

I CAN tell you that bugs and road trash at those speeds hurts like a sumbitch!!

Hey Pat,

I actually have that button that was given to movie goers when it came out.

Nuts! I didn’t get the button. I did buy a used, but very good condition DVD of Rocketeer today on Amazon. $12. These weren’t available until recently.
Love that movie.

Kawasaki did build some screamers in the 70s!! The KZ900 was fastest crotch rocket I ever flew on! 165 before you could get back off the tail light and loosen up on the throttle!:D

I was given a 1973 Kawasaki Z1B in ‘85. The bike was neglected and left outside. It had 7000 miles on it. My goal was to restore it, but it had not been registered since new in CA. California law dictated that in order to register it I would have to pay every years worth of registration fees plus late fees for a grand total of around $1500.

I gave the bike to a guy and his boys to make a big go cart with the engine.
They had previously built a go cart with a Honda 350 that I gave them. Boy, was that thing fun.
I never got to drive their Z1 Buggy, as they called it.

In the 70s if you had one of these you were the Rocketeer

Those are the reason that I decided that I really wasn't very good on a bike and should stick to four tires if I could.

Scary ass mosquito foggers...well really not that smokey...but scary!

I already have a "Super Power" but I can't reveal it due to contractual clauses and revocation of "Powers".🌞

Initially wind chill will be the issue. At sea level you will have to be travelling around 400 to 500 mph before heating from air friction equals the cooling due to wind chill.  Serious heating will not due to air friction but due to leading edge air compression. This will most likely occur when you are close to the speed of sound. Altitude will play the biggest factor as to the speed at which wind chill is overcome by heating due to air compression.

The exact speeds are going to be heavily influenced by altitude and how aerodynamic you are. The helmet that The Rocketeer wears will be better than goggles only. A helmet pointed like a dunce cap will be even better. A person with wide broad shoulders will heat up faster than small skinny one.

I would have to fly feet first.

Super powers be damned.

I just want to be 25 years old again (knowing what I know now and with perfect eyesight).......... and stay that way.

I would definitely go for that.

I'd like to have my 25 year old body back. I sure don't want to go back to work for another 40 years.
