Mystery box shopping

Recommended Posts

Mystery box shopping.  Have you done it?  Do you recommend it?  My curiosity is if these are worth a try or are typically junk that was overpriced so high they still couldn't sell it on clearance.

I've been looking for a better panfish rod.   A Missouri company emailed today that they are selling a special mystery box for $50.  There would be no returning it because the cost of oversized shipping would be more than the $50.

"Features

New Trout and Panfish Spinning Rod

$125 Minimum Value

Lengths vary from 5'-9'

All options are 1 or 2 piece poles

Ultralight to Med actions"

I'm not buying the mystery box, those parameters are like saying "we'll ship you a slingshot with good fit and finish or maybe a 26" 25-06, or maybe ..."

That was added to show the question's inspiration.

I have purchased mystery box items a couple of times…actually, 5 times.
In each instance I was disappointed.

Mystery Box items are overstock that couldn’t be sold in most cases. This is my opinion. A supposition. Since it’s 5 to 0 I think I may be onto something here.

Five-zip is definitely a trend.

Just like the "Lifetime warranty" on TV advertised gimmicks. Pretty hard to have a clearance warehouse cover it!

@Pat Riot,

I can put together a "Mystery Box" for you at a discounted $40, and your record would be 6-0.
Six is a nice EVEN number. ^_^

I'd be happy if we could get big sporting goods stores to honor their store brand warranty.

A few years ago, a regular SASS member offered a 'mystery' gun in the Classifieds. No one took it right off the bat but someone did buy it. Ended up being a damn nice gun and an outstanding value.

Pretty sure that I remember who sold it and who bought it but I'll let them post...

My wife bought some crochet mystery boxes and was quite pleased with them.

I've bought food and cooking gear mystery boxes in the past with,  for me, mixed results.   Not that the contents weren't worth well more than the price, but either duplicated gear I already had or were things I would never use.

I guess I really shoul put this in the classifieds but I have a box of stuff I’m selling and you can have it for $25.  BUT WAIT, there’s more. I’ll throw in another matching mystery box for just an additional $15.  Imagine that, two mystery boxes for less than the price of one.
