Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Mine has water and ice dispensers in the freezer door. They just stopped Friday morning and there isn't even a damp spot there now. No water, no ice, nada. There is no obvious leakage anywhere from the water line to the fridge and no mysterious wet spots inside. It's not an urgent thing.....I have ice cube trays and pitchers for water....but it is mighty inconvenient after being forty plus years with having that handy service. And with some dental work coming up for both my dog and me I can't figure out how to pay for a service call much less a new fridge. Any suggestions on what to look for to fix it? Remember that I have the craft skills of a garden snail. Thanks. 4T
Rip Snorter Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Does it have a filter in the water line? Could be that. When this POS dies, the next will not have the water and will have the internal icemaker!
Cholla Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Did you change the setting for how cold the refrigerator gets? The water line can freeze.

Our Frigidaire just did the same thing and it turned out the water filter was full and needed replacing. Clarification Or filter is inside you're right corner of refrigerator side, not outside connected to the water intake line.
Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Yep. Mine is not a GE, but when the water filter gets full, the water will stop,. I do have a warning light (I am sure it is a pressure light) when the filter needs replacing. I ignored it one time and the water stopped!
Pat Riot Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Yep, water filter’s probably clogged. AND if you buy a new one from Lowes or Home Depot open the box before you leave the store to make a new filter is inside. Scum buy new filters then put their old filter in the box. They return it and get their money back.

J.D. Daily Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 I have two GE refers. One came with a new house in 2003 & it made ice & dispensed cold water for 9 years. When we retired to NV it was moved to a shop/garage building that doesn't have a water supply. The modular house we put on the property came with a GE refer. I added an external external filter inline with the water supply. It was the same filter I had added inline with the 2003 refer. Here in Fallon the aquifer our well draws from has fine sand so before we moved in I put a sand filter with 250 mesh screen to minimize sand in the tubs & sinks. There is still a small amount of silt that collects in the tubs after many uses. With the external filter in the refer ice maker supply I have never had to change the internal or external cartridge after 20 years of use. I put the external filter in to eliminate the need to find replacement OEM filter cartridges.
Rip Snorter Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 I did the math on the filters from GE. Even in a relatively short lifespan it would virtually double the cost of the refer. Even though I have hard water, I have yet to replace it, though I have been warned for a year and a half. When it causes a problem and I must remove it, I will cobble up a bypass. Odds are, it will fail first and I'll replace it.
TN Mongo, SASS #61450 Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Amazon carries filters that fit, but are not name brand. They work well and are much cheaper.
John Kloehr Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Stupid thought... Been a while (2/1/2 years?) since I bought mine and read the manual. The fridge may have a "vacation" mode, no ice or water until you return from vacation and unset the mode. Check your manual. And take a thermometer to both the fridge and freezer. If the temps have changed and you did not change the settings, something else is up. To go further, need more details on temps and model/serial numbers. Some things are cheap, some require a technician. And some problems are not worth repairing. I do repair what I can.
Sedalia Dave Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 There are two solenoid valves on the lower back of the unit that feed water to the ice maker and water in the door. Could be that the PCB that controls them is bad.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted July 22, 2024 Author Posted July 22, 2024 Okay, I ordered a Waterline Buddy and a new filter from Amazon, checked to see if I had turned the temp down and now I wait until the 25th when Amazon delivers. They have a "hub" three miles east of me but sometimes have to get some items from further out. I've ordered some items at 0600 hrs and had delivery by suppertime. Thanks to all of you. 4T

OKAY, Amazon delivered this gizmo late yesterday and I just around to using it. I followed the directions and you know what? This stupid kindergarten simple dumb ass POS WORKED! It took three tries and about five minutes, but it is flowing like a new machine. Waiting to see if the ice maker works as well. Thanks, Cholla. I knew it wasn't likely a filter because I change the filters every 6 to 9 months, last time in mid-March, but I do appreciate the answers I got. Never know, I might find a use for them somewhere down the line. In the meantime this little gasoline syphon wanna be has a place in my gadget drawer.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted July 26, 2024 Author Posted July 26, 2024 Ice maker works, too. That minor part of my life doesn't require my using language that my mother would not approve.
