Laser on rifle mount

I see these photos of soldiers etc and they will have an optic and laser mounted on top along with a standard front sight.  I always felt nothing should be up top other than sights and optic.  Why are they not mounting the laser on underneath or even the side like the laser manufacturing company shows online?

Because it looks "tactical". Or maybe "Tacticool". Actually I don't understand mounting a laser on a rifle anyway. At any shot further than a decent iron sight picture, the trajectory will be way off. A PCC or submachine gun I can see, but not a rifle.

Nowadays the big hoopdedo is tactical lever guns .

( unfortunately it driving  the prices threw the roof)

But I digress. 

Any way I own all kinds of old Winchester 30/30 rifles .

So I took a rifle I had setting in the back of the safe , And made my own take on a tactical lever gun .

Only cost me about 100.00 Compared to the 3000.00 they want for a tactical lever gun .

With NODS or thermal optic a combination visible/IR laser is commonly used in low or no light tactical situations.  Many operators will have a Steiner or equal dual laser mounted on their M4's.  For people who play the Brutality game some of these competitions are done after dark and some stages the targets are hard to see with NODS, light intensifier optic and thermal optic.  An IR laser makes it easier to hit the target.  Thermal is worthless when the targets are steel.

P.S. An IR laser diode must be EXPENSIVE.  Even Holosun which is owned by a Chinese Co. that mfg's laser diodes suggested retail price for there dual Red/IR lasers are $900-1200.

i have crimson trace on some handguns that go back as far as i can recall in this century ,- great at close quarters i had an infrared at one time but it was early gen stuff didnt work reliably , i have lights on a couple - they are great but again more close quarters/clearing thing , im not spending on gadgets anymore , but a friend has thermal imaging that he uses on racoons in his yard , to say success would be an understatement , if there was a hillbilly food shelf they would be very well stocked , sad so much good meat goes to waste.............wonder if pigs eat racoons ? lots of fat and poteen , hmmmmmmmmmmmm

You can also use a laser to designate a target point for other shooters that can see it.

 

Barrels get hot in extended shoot situations and might fry electronics. Top mount is easier to manipulate from prone firing position.

Personally, I have never owned a laser that mounts on a gun. I prefer a mounted light. 
I am considering a light / laser combo. Olight makes a couple models I like the performance of as well as the price. 
You can select red, green or blue lasers.

A thermal optic is the bees knees for blasting nocturnal varmints.  I bought an ATN thermal to put on a CZ452 or 25 cal PCP air rifle to shoot jack rabbits that eat the miss's plants.  I've never used it for that purpose; since, for some reason they have all but disappeared.  The only rabbits are cottontails and they are protected as well as cute.  We also have ground squirrels that are smaller than chipmunks.

Are you talking like the PEQ  15? used as a target id more , Main Reason most are on top is simple put much on bottom it raises your barrel when say shooting over a sand bag therefore your brain bucket it also higher . Makes you easier to see and target .

This guy is eating a raccoon. Caught some of my brides bird feeder with shot though. I can fix it.

I asked as thought if I ever got an AR pistol I could mount a laser underneath and zero it from the hip since it’s illegal to fire them from the shoulder .

thats pretty interesting , maybe all those racoons that end up out in the back property do get eaten , he has a lot of coyotes there , 

 

its his mulberry trees that attract them , but they mess about in the garbace and tear up his grilling equipment ,
