Alliant Powder Available

Recommended Posts

Midway also has quite a few Alliant powders in stock, including Extra Lite in 1 and 8 lb containers. They have Red Dot also but it's cheaper at Mid South.

I guess I'm under a rock .

But has there been a problem getting Alliant Powder ?

I really try hard to not pay attention to the news or the press of any kind .

And I only look at supplies when it's time to start ordering more .

Thank God I bought quite a bit the last time I needed supplies.

Alliant issued a statement that they were indefinitely suspending distribution of canister powder to any and all distributors due to the (supposed) shortage of nitrocellulose. Just so you know, China, Russia and India are the main manufactures of nitrocellulose.

Alliant is owned by the same people that own CCI and Federal. Apparently nitro-cellulose is hard to come by now for some reason.

Apparently the corporate bigwigs have decided that they can make more money using their limited amount of nitro-cellulose to make powder and use the powder to load ammunition than they can to make the powder and sell it to reloaders.

So alliant powder has been scarce for the past few years.

This actually makes sense. Let's suppose that a round of 45 takes 7.0 grains of powder. That means 1 lb, which sells for about 50 bucks, will make 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

But if they use that one pound of powder to make 1000 rounds of 45, that's 20 boxes at $25 each - $500 versus $50. And that's just 1 lb. Imagine how much more money they make when they make a few tons of powder.

If a box of 50 - .45 ACP only has 7.0 grains of powder in it...they are all going to be squibs. 250 grains per box of 50 would be more like it. At the 250gr. per box, they'd still get 28 boxes per pound of powder which would still result in more profit than just selling the powder alone as you mentioned.

It’s not a conspiracy. It’s reality.
Our country sent munitions to Ukraine and Israel from our surplus stockpiles. Those stock piles need replenishment. They take precedence over civilian sales right now.

I had a mild interest in Red Dot, but not at the current price + hazmat.

I read that Red Dot and some of the others are being phased out.
Pity, as Red Dot calculates as an ideal handgun powder for my uses.

I’m rich. I have 2.5 pounds of Unique. I plan to use it up on .45 Colt rounds. I will use other powders for my other rounds.

I picked up Clays, Trail Boss, H110/296, No. 2, No. 5 and Clean Shot when they were plentiful and cheap.

H110 / 296 for 357 and 44 in rifles only.
These are particularly kind with lower chamber pressure for toggle link actions, yet deliver top velocity in a rifle.

Still investigating for the "ideal" powder for standard 45 ACP loads.

I liked how Hodgdon Universal worked in .45 ACP.
