Ammo by the gun?

Alpo

Recommended Posts

Some of you, I am sure, keep guns in various rooms. Jeff Cooper wore a gun all the time so he didn't have to have a gun in the kitchen and a gun in the living room. It was on his hip. But some people choose not to do that, so they have a gun in the kitchen and one in the living room and one in the bathroom and etc.

If you are one of these people do you keep ammunition with the gun?

On the NCIS episode where Ziva came back, she and Gibbs get into a firefight in the basement. And both of them were shooting like they were in a 1940s Western - not aiming and trying to hit something but simply pointing the gun in the general direction of the bad guys and pulling the trigger as fast as possible.

Amazingly they both shot their guns dry. Wow. And then Ziva asked Gibbs if he had any ammo. He told her not down there. And she also was not carrying any spare, so there they were.

And I thought how intelligent it would be to have some spare ammunition - couple of magazines, couple speed loaders, even just a box in the drawer where the gun is.

Because a gun ain't worth nothing if you ain't got no bullets.

Maybe a little paranoid but I carry all day every day like Cooper. I also have guns stashed around the place with at least a spare magazine close by. Living very rural, I don’t have to worry about shooting towards the neighbors so there is an AR platform in about 6 different places.

I got a friend that carries 2 pistols and extra ammo in his truck, and sometimes he carries a long gun also.

In the home, he has multiple placements of a gun.... I just don't know where nor how many.

For me, I have one 'close', regardless of my whereabouts, including extra ammo.

..........Widder

I’m never more than a few feet from a loaded gun in my house. I live alone and they’re hidden pretty well in case someone breaks in when I’m not here.

Ah, but the question was, do you keep extra ammo by the loaded gun.

In the episode I was speaking of Gibbs had an automatic stashed down there in the basement. 12 to 15 rounds, maybe. In an episode a few years earlier we see he had a Model 66 Smith. Six shot revolver. Maybe that's why he decided he needed the extra firepower of the large capacity automatic.

Yes, I have speedloaders next to my two revolvers and an extra magazine for my 1911 and my Canik 9mm. I have some extra ammo next to my shotgun in the basement.

I also have a speed loader for my carry gun that is in my car. Funny thing is I never carry the speedloader on me. Kinda dumb I know!

My EDC holds 14 rounds of .45acp Hornady Critical Duty. I carry it almost all of the time.

In the car, I have a second 20 round magazine loaded with the same ammo.

Schoolmarm keeps her ‘97 beside the bed with plenty of shell close at hand and I have a semiautomatic 12ga. with a 10 round magazine standing beside the chest of drawers on my side of the room.

There are other weapons staged in appropriate places around the house and shop and if I’m traveling in Ol’ Green, I take that semiauto 12ga and a couple of spare magazines with me.

The truth of the matter is, if I’m in a situation where I need more than the 14 rounds in my EDC, it’ll be by the grace of The Lord that I can survive and not because of any extra preparation that I have made.

I have a gun in almost every room. They are all loaded. A couple have extra mags.  If I need more ammo then I deserve what I get.

I refuse to carry a gun at all times, though I always have a knife on me or within arm’s reach.

I'm pretty much the same way. I live in a manufactured home, so it's not that big.

I have guns by each door, both Taurus 85s, the front door gun being located where I can access it while at the door. The back door gun isn't as close to the door, but since the back yard is fenced and walled off, I don't consider that to be a handicap. The backdoor gun is located where I can get to it while on the way to the backdoor from the kitchen. Since I can also get to the backdoor from my bedroom, I have other guns there. My nightstand gun is my Ruger NMV. I don't have spare ammo readily available for these guns, but there's more.

On my dresser is my EDC, Bigmouth, my 1911. Even though my NMV is on my nightstand, I'll probably grab Bigmouth first. There IS spare ammo available for him. I carry a spare magazine in my back pocket along with a knife when I'm dressed. There is also a magazine pouch with 2 loaded magazines on my dresser. Further, in a drawer of my nightstand is my S&W 625 in .45 ACP. it's also loaded, and I have a speedloader pouch with not 2, but 4 loaded Moon Clips , also on my dresser. By my bed is a Mossberg 500 with the 7 round magazine tube. It's equipped with a 7 round sidesaddle carrier as well as a 5 round carrier on the buttstock. 16 rounds of Tactical Buckshot and 3 rounds of Tactical slugs. I figure that as long as I can make it to my room, I should be able to hold them off.

Oh yeah, in a lockbox under the driver's seat of the Jeep is a Star Firestar with 2 spare magazines.

AND I religiously follow Rule 9, "Never go anywhere without a knife".

What kind of speedloader pouch are you using? That would be just the ticket for me and my Model 25 with it's 3" barrel.

I do the same thing, but I use nylon cases. They're cheaper than the leather.moonclipcarry1.thumb.jpg.6a6115c7af7ed21977f283ec78cea07c.jpg

Have you ever opened a Velcro closure at night or when it’s really quiet? It’s quite an attention getter.

If I rip open the velcro, it is because I've already fired the 6 that's in the gun, and it is no longer quiet.

Sorry Alpo, while serviceable, nylon just doesn't have the class and style that leather does. Besides, the HKS pouches are only $22.

BTY, just how long have you been storing that ammo?! Looks like a lot of verdigri there. Mine are loaded with Federal Hydra Shok in nickel cases.moonclipcarry3.thumb.jpg.d9353e40fbbbc648a4f870d31cc2d2d7.jpg.14efff8cba3a16c26f067f803b770200.jpg

OK, I finally have to say it:
My first thought on reading the title of this thread was, "No, I just buy random ammo on special and hope to eventually have a gun that uses it."

There...

I feel so much better now.

Well, I have a friend that has 150 rounds of .357 SIG that he doesn't have a gun for. Even HE doesn't know where he got it, since he's never HAD a .357 SIG.

I always have  a gun at hand and a full reload just in case.

Like the Rooster, if I don't have a larger size gun [Commander, Sig 229 etc] on my hip there is a Kahr 380 in my pocket. Sometimes both...

Given the variety of bullets and cases, those appear to be a bunch of 'found-loose-on-loading-bench' cartridges.

Not exactly what I'd keep at-the-ready for self-defense.

I knew a police officer back in ‘83 that ripped open the Velcro cover of his flashlight or speedloader (can’t remember exactly) in a dark alley looking for a bad guy in L.A.

That noise allowed him to find out the new body armor they were issued worked. He took a shot in his chest. Luckily his partner shot the bad guy.
I will not use gear that has Velcro if the gear is for hunting or defense.

off the track here but  . . .

that's why I wondered why the Army put velcro on the field jacket sleeves down where you adjust the end,  this being in the late 60s to early 70s

Or on hunting blind windows! There is absolutely no way to open one quietly.
