Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
I am sure you remember the name, at the time he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood. At the time of his death in 1930 at age 47, actor Lon Chaney was the highest-paid performer under contract to the powerhouse Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. Chaney had just signed a new contract with the studio that guaranteed him a record $3750 per week. Chaney earned that enormous amount of money because his pictures earned the studio enormous amounts of money at the box office. MGM paid him well because they wanted to prevent him from signing with another film company. Unfortunately, the only film Chaney made under the new contract was “The Unholy Three,” his only talking picture. An inveterate cigarette smoker, Lon Chaney died of bronchial cancer on August 26, 1930. And I found the movie, there is a colorized version on YouTube. Blackwater 53393
He was an absolute master at makeup and disguise! In a time long before any of the special effects that are so prevalent now, he created characters and images that were astounding even by today’s standards!
