Trigger Mike
Am watching The Caine Mutiny and before battle the crew is told to put on anti flash cream. Why?
Subdeacon Joe
To prevent flashburns. https://marinesinforestgreen.blogspot.com/2016/12/wwii-cream-protective-flashburn-iwo.html Not just from serving the guns, but Japanese had buried explosives on the beaches, as well as shelling the beaches. It helped prevent burns from the flash of those. 2

Alpo
I believe that's the same purpose of these hoods. That's from The Guns of Navarone. The German gunners. The guns themselves are in a cave, to hide them from the allies. So there's a lot of flash. You have to blow that picture up, but you can see the gunners from the front in it. And you can see the hood covers most of their face and their shoulders and the tops of their arms. Protecting them from flash burns. 2

I forget my exact phrasing, but when I googled US WWII flash gear one of the things that came up was that thread.
