I believe that's the same purpose of these hoods.

That's from The Guns of Navarone. The German gunners. The guns themselves are in a cave, to hide them from the allies. So there's a lot of flash.

You have to blow that picture up, but you can see the gunners from the front in it. And you can see the hood covers most of their face and their shoulders and the tops of their arms. Protecting them from flash burns.
