Flea collar suggestions...?

Recommended Posts

So there are six cats around the ol' scatter.  Wanting to outfit 'em all with flea collars ~ have used Soresto in the past, but I'm here to tell you, I ain't wanting to drop $300 on flea collars.

Any of y'all had any luck with other less pricey brands?  I've noticed that some of the ones with good reviews are mosty "herbal" in nature, and I suspect that those reviews might be more their being "green" than effectiveness.

BTW ~ I've used Frontline on the critters.  Think water or beer might've been just as efficacious.

I use Front Line on my dog.  Check with a vet to see if it's okay to use on cats.

It's a topical liquid applied to the back of the neck once a month and it works quite  nicely to keep fleas off.

We gave our dogs a pill that we got at our vet. I do not recall the name, but it really worked well. My wife said there’s one for cats.

In thinking about this I recall trying to give cats pills. It thoroughly sux. Never mind.

The cats don't go out so nothing for them. The dog we used to use Frontline, but it seemed to really irritate them as they roll and rub all over the carpet within few minutes of application. We now use "Simperica Trio", a pill once a month thrown in with her food, previous dog would eat em like a treat. Kills fleas, ticks and heartworm. Works like a charm. We occasionally find a dead tick on the floor but nothing on the dog. And we sure have friggin ticks around! Pricey, but I think better than a collar that you're always touching and getting in your hands and cloths.

If we be talking about basically FEREL cats, my suggestion would be a .22 lead pill.  Very effective and only one application.

Treat the house, treat the yard, treat the pets at the same time.  If you don't eliminate flea larvae in the house and yard, you won't see much improvement with collars alone.  Use methoprene (precor) to kill larvae in the house.  Professional exterminator may be needed for house and yard.  They are expensive because sometimes they are worth it.

I wholeheartedly agree.
I didn’t think about that until you mentioned it.

When we moved into the house we’re in now in WV we did exactly that and we had no issues with fleas.
We have done the same with every house we’ve  owned or lived in for the past 35 years.

Unfortunately our dog Maddie passed in November. She had stage 4 bone cancer and we didn’t even know it. We chalked her slow movement and painful joints to old age. She was 12. I miss my Maddie Girl.

I did the same thing when Alex was alive. Yard, house, everything. Never had a problem with fleas. Regardless of 'the bug guy's' assurances, I wouldn't play ball/frisbee with Alex until the next day after the yard was sprayed. Didn't really like letting him in the yard to go to the bathroom either but did.

Haven't had an animal for years now, just too hard. Alex died from hermangiosarcoma, a blood cancer. I'm not so sure that all of the chemicals associated with parasite control don't contribute to the cancers and ailments that affect many pets and ultimately, their deaths.

It's a trade off I guess. Can't let your best friend get chewed up by fleas and there's no real alternatives.

I was a cat piller once. It really sucks and doesn't work for me like the vet showed me! The wife would've killed me if the cat had disappeared!

Our cats loved vanilla ice cream so I ground up their pill and put it in ice cream for each one of them. An 1/8 of a cup of ice cream sure did keep the scratching and biting out of the picture.
