Do 'P's increase with hot weather?

Just curious.

In today's match, it was hot.

The stages were relatively simple and no obvious 'P traps' or shooter ambushes.

BUT........ it seemed that thru-out the match (and not just one particular stage) there seem to be an unusual amount

of 'P's earned.

Just wondering if at your hot weather matches if the 'P's increase in relation to rising temps.

And yea..... I earned one also.  😊

Yeah, I have for several summers now seen the Ps mount up quickly in NM club matches and annuals in hot weather, especially on a 5th or 6th stage at 1 or 2 PM.   That is with lots of reminders to drink lots of fluids.   Some folks are obvious about drinking extra in hot weather.  Many are not.

good luck, GJ

That is why everyone tells you to keep hydrated.  If i am dried out I can't P at all.

Amen brother. I can surely sweat though.

I can't see how they wouldn't,.

Dehydration, electrolyte depletion, distraction, heat stress -- hot weather brings on too many things that take the edge off of mental performance, and I believe P's tend to be more a measure of the mental aspect of the stage.

Add into that the posse duties do not diminish just because of heat, but the people who do them does -- any cowboy is going to step up their game to fill in when fellow shooters get worn down by the heat, and some posse members get worn down faster than others.

Knowing that heat can be an issue, we do things that can speed the match up such as quick stages, multiple stages per bay and/or starting earlier. Like a bad battery, my juice starts failing early and gets quite depleted by stage 4 or 5.

PLUS ONE for Pettifogger.

I hydrate heavily in hot weather.  Seems like I get a "P" every other stage.  If yer not getting Ps ya ain't hydrating enough B)

Also - if you don’t “P” in hot weather - you’re not hydrating enough!

At the Texas State "heat match" last month, there were 58 P's.  I'm not sure how that compared to the previous year.

I was on Widder's posse yesterday; it was hot!  We all struggled to stay focused. Even the top shooters were messing up.  The sad thing is that yesterday was not quite as hot, or humid, as our local shoots the last two Saturdays before.  Our high humidity here in the Southeast makes high temps even worse.

and 5 people succumbed to the heat, including my wife who drinks water like a fish so it was HOT.

We also used to call Hawaiian shirt days.  Basically, we required cowboy boots & hats.  Whatever was in between was up to the shooter.  It was frowned upon in SASS at the time, but in the South's heat & humidity, it kept people on the range.  I, personally, have an 85-degree rule.  Except for Black Gold.

Imagine if was a 12 stage match and  having to shoot 6 stages a day instead of 5. I Didn't pass out or earn any "P's" I  think not sure. DIDN'T put anything away when we finished just sat in the truck with face in the AC vent!!! I'll take the dry 112° heat any day.

We tend to discourage loin cloths for the men shooters.

Ban them from picking brass, at least.

No one warned me... I spent most of the day trying to shade my eyes from all the reflected glare!  Not to mention how the heat can aggravate tempers... I once had to break up a near fight between a couple of frustrated competitors.

from an article entitled How Heat Kills:

Attacking the brain

Heat also affects the brain. It can cause a person to have confusion, or trouble thinking, several doctors said.

“One of the first symptoms you’re getting into trouble with the heat is if you get confused,” said University of Washington public health and climate professor Kris Ebi.

That’s little help as a symptom because the person suffering from the heat is unlikely to recognize it, she said.

And it becomes a bigger problem as people age.

A general rule is  as match difficulty increases, you will first see an increase in misses, then an increase in Procedural s.  That is true for the weather conditions as well as the match design.

In summer, locals (for me) usually get a little simpler; mostly so I don't abuse my setup crew that has to drag everything out but also because as we get near the middle of the day on a Georgia summer Saturday, folks are just wiped out and want to be done with it all. If ya go gettin all complicated, you will absolutely have more mistakes (misses and procedurals) and folks will get cranky... I sure do.

Don’t tell Christian that!

I try to get a bottle of water per stage. As Widder said the match Saturday was hot! Five bottles of water and no Ps, and no need to pee, so definitely hot.

I'll bet if you kept the stats that misses also increase when it is really hot.

Howdy SD.

Some of those 'Misses' are probably missed because the spotters are also getting hot and having attentive issues.  😀

I was at a Shoot on Labor Day in Louisiana with no air stirring and 100 degrees. I dropped 4 shells trying to load my double. and my buddies made me sit down drink water and cool off. They probably saved me from heat stroke.

We did once have one turn up wearing a barrel.

Absolutely “Ps” increase with high temps ESP. In matches with 6 or more stages.
