Took my parents to the show yesterday afternoon. Theater was pretty full, at least fuller than I have seen for sometime. The movie was okay at best, it was slow paced with way to many story lines. The overwhelming chatter from the audience after was they would not be seeing the sequels? I won’t say I’m not seeing the next one but it will be way down on the list. Was really hoping it would have been much better.

Thanks for the review, we are going to see it Sunday. Mixed reviews here. So I guess I will go and see what I think.

We saw the movie tonight:

1.  it's Cowboy - how can you miss it?!

2.  it's very slow moving

3.  there are four or five significant story lines, headed to a convergence - which is why it took so long (3 hour movie) - too many for my preference.

4.  Costumes, leather, horses, scenery, and guns were great - no significant errors that catch your attention (but I'm not a gunsmith or historian)

5.  There are several morality questions, but with the constant storyline changes, they can't develop the characters enough for you to feel for them, or against them.. There are difficult situations, and sometimes too violently gratuitous.

6. I hope Kevin Costner would NOT take that laying still.

7. Yes, I would have waited for it to show up on cable / netflix.

I like complicated plot lines, unless it’s cartoons.  Trying to keep them all straight is entertaining to me.

 

I like longer movies!!  They have room in the script to provide more depth and detail!  Usually more for the money as well.

 

It’s a WESTERN!!  Ya’ gotta be happy that somebody is keeping that part of our heritage alive for everyone to see and hopefully enjoy!

 

It’s a serial!!  That gives the folks who enjoy it something to look forward to and to speculate on what happens next!

 

I hope that it’s as good as all the publicity has made it out to be. It’ll be great to have more to look forward to in the coming months!!

 

Me ‘n’ Schoolmarm have a lunch date with another couple, cowboy shooters like us, and we have reservations to see the movie after lunch!!  That makes it even better!!

Our local theater (the only one in town) is not showing it. I am pissed off as all they show here is junk. The theater is owned by Allen Theaters with outlets in Durango and Farmington ,NM (all 6 of them) and they are showing it at ALL of them. I sent their corporate office an email and I intend to call them Monday. I really don't want to drive 50 miles to Durango to see it.

Maybe it's old age but......more and more movies and TV series have so much going on with so many characters and story lines you need a notepad to keep thing s straight.

 

That and one season ends and the next isn't for another year or 2. You have to go back and re-watch it all too know what happened before.

 

Oh, and a season on TV used to be 20 episodes, not 8!

Agreed. I like simple plots, (maybe because I'M simple), without a lot of back room subterfuge.

If you look back into the early '60s, a lot of shows ran a 35 episode season.

I went to the theater but it was crowded with squirts watching Inside Out 2.  I will go to see Horizen later this week.  The reviews have not been good and it bombed at the box office.  Parts 1 and 2 were filmed at the same time.  There will not be parts 3 and 4 if the box office does not improve significantly.  Maybe this will induce Costner to stick with Yellowstone.

Just got back from dinner and the movie!!

 

IT WAS EXCELLENT!!

 

The plots were straight forward. There ARE  several, but you can see where some of them will meld soon. Others will take a while!

 

There’s plenty of action, but I didn’t think it was overboard and it was very believable.

 

Costner himself didn’t appear until well into the first hour and, to this point, he didn’t dominate the screen time.

 

I’m not really certain about the time line.  There are a lot of cartridge guns for the middle of the Civil War.  It’s by no means a detractor for the movie, but it is there.  One shot shows a gunbelt with the cartridge loops full of center fire primed cartridges.

 

Some of the actors are long time western regulars that you might not recognize at first. 
 

The cinematography is fabulous!!  I’ve been to several of the locations, but some of the aerial shots are utterly spectacular! This is one that really SHOULD BE seen on the big screen and I don’t mean you 85” flat screen TV!!  
 

The sound is great too! I didn’t have to readjust my hearing aids to catch any of the lower voice conversations, nor for the really loud explosion and gunfire scenes.  That’s always a plus!!

 

I thoroughly enjoyed the show! The three hours seemed more like an hour and a half to me.  I’m really looking forward to the next episode.

 

As far as the box office, our theater was sold out for our show and I saw no empty seats. The box office at the theater complex added another screeing between ours and the later showing in a second theater!  The late show was sold out and the added one was selling out quickly.

I thought they were walkers at first, but pretty sure they had loading lever latches, my guess is second model Dragoons.

Mr. Costner’s heavily publicized “Horizon,” which cost an estimated $100 million to make and another $30 million to market, arrived as a distant third. It was on pace to earn $11 million, analysts said. (Theaters and studios split ticket sales roughly 50-50.) Mr. Costner had been holding out hope that fans of the hit contemporary Western series “Yellowstone,” particularly those in the middle of the country, would flock to theaters. It proved to be a pipe dream.

Could “Horizon” gain its footing in the coming weeks? Box office experts were not optimistic, citing weak reviews. In addition, ticket buyers gave “Horizon” a grade of B-minus in CinemaScore exit polls, which means that word of mouth will be soft.

My wife and I did go see it on Sunday. All the theaters were sold out around here on Saturday and most of Sunday. We found one that did have some decent seats so went on Sunday afternoon. We both felt it was a good movie but did drag in some parts. We will both go to Part 2 when it comes out.

Just got back (Monday) from Horizen.  If they lopped off an hour and put it on Netflix it might rate two stars.  I will go to part 2 to see if it gets any better.  Unless a miracle happens at the box office there won't be parts 3 and 4.  Open Range is infinitely better.

Just got back home from seeing it.  Thought it was Fantastic and WILL be going to see Chapter 2 next month!  Totally agree with everything that Blackwater stated in his review.  Go see it on the big screen with great sound instead of waiting for it to come out and watching it on your TV.

As I said in my post, the movie “moves” and yes there are a long of story lines, it stands alone. I was left with wishing the next on would come sooner, will be seeing the next one in August!  No different than the first 3 Star Wars trilogy, you were left each movie, waiting for the next one.
