Is it possible to shoot Duelist with only one revolver?

Funny how times changed.  When I started several stages called for only some of the guns we now use.  Sometimes only 1 pistol.  Sometimes no shotgun, etc.  I still have a bunch of old stage instructions that way.

Interesting... Keep that idea alive for the next ammo shortage. Or because of the heat! Could a stage be shot a couple different ways with varying firearms. As long as the load and unload tables keep up the flow, would reduce walking between bays.

It has been too hot this month! Might be more comfortable to shoot two stages in a bay and use fewer bays.

Honestly, it would be great if there was a way for new shooters to get involved in the game without requiring all 4 guns and/or depending on the generosity of other shooters to lend them guns.

California has at least two laws that make getting into the sport prohibitive. First, you can only purchase one gun every 30 days (with few exceptions). That means it would take a minimum of nearly 4 months to get your 4 guns. Second, because the background check expires every 30 days you MUST pay for a new background check for every new gun (previously if you were buying multiple guns at once you only paid for the background check once). That's an extra $140 bucks to the cost of the guns (4*$35.00). Third, there is now an additional 11% tax (on top of sales tax) on all new gun purchases, so if you are buying your guns brand new you get to pay an extra 11% for each one (so, say, an extra $150 for the pistols, an extra $150 or the rifle, and an extra $100 for the shotgun or so).

None of this will help the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting expand in CA. While we try to change laws the courts don't budge, and even if they eventually do, what can we do in the meantime? Figure out a way for people to shoot with fewer guns. Whether it's a different class, side matches, or something else.  Understanding that CA isn't the only state, requiring 4 guns is potentially cost prohibitive no matter where you are.

At any rate, when my wife started shooting she only had one pistol. She wouldn't use mine because I was shooting cap and ball and she didn't want to deal with it. They marked 5 misses on the first stage and then someone lent her another gun and holster for the rest of the monthly. She wasn't about to reload on the clock as she knew that would slow the match down and neither of us wanted slow our posse down (and I already had two cap guns to recharge while trying to manage chores).

The high cost and the amount of guns and equipment necessary is definitely very prohibitive. It’s taken me several thousand dollars and nearly three years to get where I’m at — and I’m still a pistol and a pair of boots short.

I’d hope to see some flexibility and branching out of SASS in the future, sort of like what NCOWS is doing with two, three, and four gun run groups, along with reenactment events and historical camping. I’ll be checking them out for sure when I move to South Carolina.

I believe you might be mistaken about the 1 gun in 30 day law. That only applies to new handguns and semi auto rifles. Lever rifles, SxS and other cowboy shotguns are not restricted to the gun a month law. According to the FFL that I used recently in Carlsbad, Ca. the used Ruger Vaqueros could go home with me after the 10 day waiting period.

I'm not a lawyer, so I very well could be wrong. The current penal code is:

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=27535.&nodeTreePath=9.4.7.4.1&lawCode=PEN

Quote

27535.  (a) A person shall not make an application to purchase more than one firearm within any 30-day period. This subdivision does not authorize a person to make an application to purchase a combination of firearms, completed frames or receivers, or firearm precursor parts within the same 30-day period.

However a) this was struck down by a federal judge who immediately stayed their judgement so CA can appeal, and the case remains administratively stayed (meaning the law remains in effect). There are some exceptions (like private party sales, perhaps consignment?).

Here's some relevant text from the stay by the 9th circuit

Quote

In 2019, California included semiautomatic centerfire rifles under the OGM
law, and that addition went into effect on July 1, 2021. 2019 Cal. Stat. ch. 737
(S.B. 61), § 5 (amending Cal. Penal Code § 27535). In doing so, the Legislature
noted that “[m]ore and more shootings [were] occurring with long guns.” S.B. 61,
June 25, 2019 Assembly Committee on Public Safety Hearing, 2019-2020 Reg.
Sess. (Cal. 2019) at 3.
While this case was pending, in 2022, the California Legislature expanded the
OGM law to include any firearm, completed frames or receivers, or firearm
precursor parts. 2022 Cal. Stats. ch. 76 (Assemb. B. 1621), §§ 18-21. This went
into effect on January 1, 2024. Id.

I'm with you guys...trying to get F1 to make a few changes so I can compete...I mean...what's with all the rules and regulations!!!! They should make it affordable for everyone!!!!!

But, thanks for these thoughts and ideas. Never heard them before.

Luckily for us, there are more affordable and accessible formula racing options and classes than F1.

I mean this is hardly an alteration to the rules. What's the difference between coming up with one gun and taking 5 misses or coming up with a broken gun, declaring it broken immediately, and taking 5 misses?

I wouldn’t even think abiut doing that, wait until you get another pistol !

I would suggest they call the club contact and ask this question.  I would encourage them to come shoot with what they have AND would offer to bring & loan them a pistol and ammo for as long as it takes them to get the items they are missing.

SASS rules or not, I wouldn't award a new shooter the P for not using second pistol at a monthly.

I guess you don't attend matches at your "home club"?  You might have noticed in the last several years, we've been shooting two stages on one bay.

🤨

I've been a regular at that club for 14 years, and the stage writer/match director there since 2016 and I've seen you at exactly one match.

Yeah, I've been to 3. Have everything I need to show up except time.

When you get time come on back. As the club safety officer I would ask one thing of you. Please chronograph your loads. I'm old but I recall your significant other was causing significant splashback. I had planned on asking you next time I saw you. If you don't have a chronograph we can find someone who can test them.

I'll follow up with you by PM or on the local forum when it looks like I can get to a shoot. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I do have a chronograph but have not tried it yet.

Rule changes, mule changes... LOCAL CLUBS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ALLOWED TO DO WHAT THEY WANT.*  You want to shoot a State, Regional, National, or International Championship, comply with the rules, or get them changed.  But, as for my personal opinion... I moved out of CA for very valid reasons.  I neither want, nor will support any motion to have our International Organization kowtow to the whims of the fruits, flakes & nut that make up the apparent voting majority and their elected representatives from one state.

As said many times before, over many many years...  Yes, it's an expensive sport... but less so than ones like golf, boating, drag racing among a host of others.  . Leisure time activities and the budget allocated thereto is a matter of personal choice and capability.  Leisure time activities should be fully funded with "disposable" cash, not credit.  There's your free financial advice for the day... Worth exactly what you paid for it.

*  Emphasis added to bring your attention to a clear fact.  But, to be clear, by allowing folks to compete in the same categories as other folks using fewer firearms and less shots, you have changed the basic nature of fair competition and delved into the arena of farce.
