Beartrap SASS#57175 Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Any tips for getting lube build up out of seating dies without having to disassemble the die and readjust it?
Texas Jack Black Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 I use a small brass screw driver Insert and move it around a bit and the lube comes out. Easy solution. I know ,I know it is not rocket science so it must not work.
Eyesa Horg Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 I use a Q tip with solvent and a mirror. Went to coated bullets and no more build up in the dies.

Eyesa Horg Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Usually just sprayed a little Birchwood Casey Gun Cleaner on the Q tip. Brake cleaner worked too. If you're getting a lot of build up, make a habit of doing it every time you add more primers and the build up will be minimal and come right out.
Sam Sackett Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Yep. Scrape out the heavy stuff and then wipe out the rest with a solvent on a Q tip. I use gun cleaning fluid or mineral spirits. Sam Sackett

You might want to take it out and give it a good cleaning once then periodically use the swab or whatever to maintain. I was always amazed at how much lube accumulated up in the die. Put a couple register marks on the die and press before removing the die. Should get you pretty close when putting back together. Should be minimal adjustment to get back to your setting. Spay cleaner/ brake cleaner and brass pistol brush cleans them right up. Switched to coated bullets years ago, problem solved. LF.
Assassin Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 If you're loading 38 special, run a 357 mag thru occasionally. All that build up gets cleaned out.
Chief Rick Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 You've already received the answer I would've given for cleaning. That said. this is one of the reasons I went with Dillon dies. Pull a pin and the seating stem drops right out. Clean it and put it back in, reseat the pin and your setting never changes.
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Start using coated bullets. Use a popsicle stick to scrape the wax out.
Cold Lake Kid, SASS # 51474 Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 I just soaked mine in Varsol for a couple of days, then dried them out. Didn't even have to take apart, but I did anyway, just to make sure they were nice and clean.
Griff Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Use a little more bell. Don't over lube. A key element is accurate adjustment of your lubri-sizer.
J-BAR #18287 Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 What dies do you have? I use Dillon dies in my Dillon 550. The internals drop out easily when the retaining clip is removed. Soak them in a cup of mineral spirits, wipe them out, and reinstall. No readjustment required.
