Toasters today

Recommended Posts

I have a Kenmore Elite toaster. It has controls you can set from 1-9. It’s always set on 5 as you can see. Problem is different breads toast different. Wheat usually is quicker and sometimes burnt at 5 so I have to set it lower. Different Italian breads and regular white bread are all different. What happened to the old fashioned toasters that had no settings or just a button that said Dark or Light. You just checked it occasionally. I hate this thing!

I checked em out on Amazon, they all have "shade settings", can't seem to find a plain old fashioned toaster!

The toasters of old had a sensor inside that monitored the surface of the toast. Hence the Light to dark settings.

Today's toasters use a simple mechanism that trips after a set time. Has nothing to do with how light or dark the toast is. It uses a poorly made and very inaccurate timer.  This is why when you do two consecutive cycles the second time the toast is burnt. The wire used for the heating elements was also of better quality and heated more evenly.

Why a toaster from 1949 is still smarter than any sold today

I have a Dualit toaster I bought many years ago and it still works fine.  It has a dial timer that goes from 1-4 and there is a mark at 2.5, which indicates the most preferred setting.  However, some breads require more time and some less.  I haven't gone past the 2.5 mark much but on occasion more time is needed when some breads  are denser than others.  There isn't one setting that covers all possible types of bread/bagels, etc.

We tossed the old toaster-oven to gain counter space.  Toast is made either by placing bread on a rack in the oven set on "broil", or heating bread in a skillet on the stove.  It works for us.

My toaster has 6 different settings for different breads as well as Bagels and such.  Learning to run the thing takes an "Operations Manual" to figure it out.  Had it for six or eight years now.  Actually know how to make toast.  Or flat charcoal.  Durn thing will toast 4 slices of anything you put innit.

I have a Breville Toaster Oven that I was given as a going away present from my guys at my last job. The best kitchen appliance that I have ever owned. Our toaster just sits taking up space now, but does come in handy occasionally.
Get yourself one of these. You will wonder how you ever got along without one.

Wait until it emails you or sends your phone a voice mail telling you that it burnt the toast or that your coffee is ready

I make toast, bagels, pizzas, wings and a bunch of other stuff in mine. My wife has made cinnamon toast in it. It’s only limited by the size of what you want to use it for.
One day last winter I broiled steaks in it. They came out great.

Sounds good but I checked your link and it is on the expensive side for a toaster so it is good it does more than just toast.

Go to Goodwill or an estate sale and buy an old toaster. The best popcorn poppers I ever got was from an antique store and I have 2 of them and the ex-wive has one of them. I checked my toaster and it has a lever that goes from light to dark. Probably an 60's or 70's model I got at a thrift store after my divorce. I gave somewhere between $3 to $5 for it.
