I was required to do it in legible cursive.

At home there were 10 spiral bound notebooks filled with cursive practice before I was freed from that discipline. I’ve two younger brothers who can’t/won’t write legibly. How they escaped that instruction, I’ll never know.

Notice I never used the word ‘torture’.

My wife used to make our kids write "lines" whenever they misbehaved.

More than once I got my butt tanned using ditto marks in my “Write this 50 times” bull sh…stuff.

Mercurochrome wasn't the bad one.  It was merthiolate that would set you on fire.
