Favorite Donut

Recommended Posts

The other donut thread got me to thinking about my favorite donuts. When I was working at Daylight Donuts/Jim Dandy Fried Chicken I really liked their glazed blueberry cake donuts. There is a donut shop in Escondido called Peterson’s Donut Corner and they came out with a maple frosted longjohn  with crumbled bacon on it and it is decadent. There is a donut shop in Murrieta, Ca. on the way up to Norco and Cajon matches that has a wide assortment of designer donuts and they offer the maple bacon  longjohn  too. Their crème brûlée donut is very good also.

There’s a donut shop in Madison, a section of Metropolitan Nashville that make several great donuts and serves them in a small dining room, over the counter for takeout, and at a convenient drive in window.

They make several fruit fritters of enormous size and finest quality, filled throughout with fruit and generously spiced and glazed.

They also make really good cake donuts in several fruit flavors and also in chocolate, again with a generous glaze, as well as vanilla and chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

They make a great variety of filled donuts too! Fruit jams of the usual selection and cream and custard with your choice caramel, maple, or chocolate frosting or with the same generous glaze if you prefer.

They also make a damn fine regular donut, either glazed or frosted and also with several nut and sprinkle toppings as well as the bacon topping mentioned in a previous post.

Finally, they make several variations of the “long john” with the same variety of toppings and a choice of chocolate cream, whipped cream, or custard filling.

They don’t make every kind every day, but there’s always something to satisfy your sweet tooth!

My own preference is the custard filled donut with the regular glaze, but the apple fritter is a very close second!

There's a Tim Horton's beside the Sheriff's office in Ashland County.
Next trip down I'm getting the Cold Lake Kid's recommendation!

(As far as what is my favorite doughnut ... YES!)

I’m a fritter fan also. There used to be a donut shop in Escondido, Marts Donuts that would feature a cranberry fritter at Thanksgiving for about 2 weeks and it was really good. Sadly they went out of business a few years ago and I’ve never seen another donut shop with the cranberry fritter.

In late 1978, a dozen glazed donuts was a $1 (+ tax) a dozen at a donut shop in Clearwater. I was in-between jobs (unemployed), money ran out and...well...you know the story.

Donuts were what I lived on for about a month...glazed donuts. After visiting the donut store about 10 times, the girl who worked there said that I must like donuts, I told her that that's what I could afford for now. That order, and all of the rest of the orders, she included a chocolate glazed donut with the rest of the donuts even though they didn't charge me for the extra donut. It was a special treat to me at the time.

I rarely eat donuts these days but it's hard to pass up a chocolate glazed donut if I happen to see one in a "I brought donuts, want one." kind of thing.

I can’t pick one ! Glazed are probably the first but it’s hard to decide if there’s chocolate frosted, Maple frosted or a French cruller!

Back when dirt was young and so was I, back when I was young and skinny ...
I was a working medic in Cambridge.

Every Sunday we'd take the first-out ambulance and go wheelin' uptown, we'd stride boldly into Kennedy's Bakery and get a large box of assorted.
My favorite, in those days, was the powdered-sugar-dusted, white-cream-filled, stick doughnuts.

Made fresh, still warm!

Nowadays, it's honestly anything from Kennedy's!
They're halfway down the state from me, but they're a regular stop when we head for the Ohio River!

It's known by maple bars, maple long johns, and a few others.

Winston's were the best but I haven'r seen a Winston's in years.

Safeway make some passable ones, but they don't quite cut it.  Dunkin' doesn't have anything worth taking home.

There was a Korean owned place a half mile west of my business in San Dimas who did a good job...sometimes.  If Mama made them they were great.  If her daughters did they were okay, but nothing special.

And just for what it's worth, there are times I'd kill for real NY style prune Danish.  Haven't seen one of them since Hector was a pup, either.

Tim Hortons Honey Crueler.

Oh, and a Double/Double!

We have a Tim Horton’s in Morgantown, West Virginia. I do like their Honey Crullers. My favorite is their Boston Cream. I buy one of each every time I go there. Best donuts in my area.

Gluten-free, zero carb, no sugar and no calorie donuts (ice cubes).

:P

Regular donuts hate on me with a vengeance that runs for days on end.

If you ever make it up this way, in winter, with your skates* you can try one, or two, or three of Grant Hookers Beaver Tails and a hot chocolate!

It could be a toss up which you decide you want to terminally gorge on!

* In winter, we have the longest skating rink in the world the Rideau Canal Skateway.

Had to make a hardware store run this morning and this doughnut thread steered me toward the fresh baked doughnuts at the back of the friendly local IGA.

A mother and her teen age son were making their selections.

She turned and asked if I wanted that last cinnamon roll.

I laughed and said no ma'am, I have designs on something else entirely.

She said they were only just returned from an out of town trip, they were going to pick up their dog from where they'd been obliged to board it, and they always took him a treat when they came home from somewhere.

(I got one of the other cinnamon rolls, cream cheese icing with crushed nuts, they had a half dozen on the grab-it-and-growl tray ... it didn't last long ... yum!)
