I was at an A's game a few decades back, seated in the upper deck.  A Black gentleman and his buddy were on their way back from the snack bar, gentleman numbah one with a bag o' popcorn.  They paused to watch a particular batter; the popcorn dude with his forearms rested on the rail, popcorn bag in hand.   He turned to tell his buddy something just as the batter hit a high foul.  Sure 'nuff, as the guy was talking to his bud, that ball prescribed a high ballistic trajectory, and nailed that bag o' popcorn dead center.  Did not hit him at all, but that popcorn literally EXPLODED!  :o

I will never forget the look on his face ~ it made the national news that night!

I thought if they bounced over the fence it was a double?

Or does that require it having to hit the ground to bounce over. And that bounced over without hitting the ground?

If the hit ball was going down the baseline, and was obviously going to be fair, and the fielder reached for it and it bounced off his glove and went out, would it be considered a foul ball?

Seems like that would be the same thing. If it did not been for player interference, that long hit would have hit the fence and bounced off. So in my hypothetical, if it was not for player interference, the ball would have been fair?

Just trying to understand the rules. It's been a long damn time since I played baseball.

Nope.  He was in fair territory when he touched it.  And I saw one just a week or two ago where the ball was going to land foul, but the fielder touched it while he was in fair territory and it was ruled a fair ball.

And if you hit the bull, you get a steak.

IIRC, several years ago, a player was struck on top of his head by a fly ball that then cleared the fence without hitting anything else and it was declared a home run!!

I know that a baseball hitting the fielder’s glove on the fly and then going over the fence in fair territory is a home run, so long as it doesn’t hit anything else in the field of play.
