Blackwater 53393
Why not just use .44 Russian?? Nothing to “cut down”, readily available, known load performance, and it’s within a thousandth or two of the length of the original .44 Henry cartridge!!! EDIT: And it fits the chamber of the .44 special or .44 magnum gun with no problem!! The same modified carrier will work for the .44 Russian! Major Art Tillery
I had one of my 1860 Henry's worked over by Boomstick, he did an excellent job with it. It was originally a 44-40 with standard barrel length 24.5" Now it sports a 20" barrel and has been rechambered in 44Russian. (Barrel diameter is the same for both cartridges in modern rifles) I find it to be perfect for what I do... Balance is nice with light recoil. With a Henry, since it is loaded down the tube, a cartridge stop is all that needs to be added for the shorter round ( a simple set screw)... Along with a slight groove cut in bolt face for it to clear. I absolutely love shooting the 44 Russian

Springfield Slim SASS #24733
Or, use the same Smith Shop carrier and load 44-40 brass that has been cut down to 44 Russian length, and use a good roll crimp, in 44-40 guns. My daughter and I have been doing just that for the last year or so, works fine. Plus I was able to take about 1200 split 44-40 brass and use it again, so free brass. You do have to run a short bullet, as the Russian length cases are longer than C45S cases. But you get to use the thinner 44-40 brass which cuts down on blow-back. Plus save on gunpowder, which isn't as plentiful as it once was. To be clear we have only done this with real Blackpowder, haven't tried with smokeless cartridges yet. I call this case the 44 Cowboy Short. Edited June 11 by Springfield Slim SASS #24733

Abilene, SASS # 27489
I've heard of 44wcf in the older Navy Arms '66 but never 44 Spcl! Was it rebarreled?

It has the original barrel. It was milled off and re-cut for the correct rim size and set back just a smige. She works great . I'm really happy with the rifle . I would just like to shoot 44 Russian to be able to replicate the original 44 flat cartridge. Rooster
