God-awful ugly rifle

Got this email from Brownells. They're having a contest and the pricePRIZE is a lever action rifle. Made by Rossi.

Then I look at it. Throw up a little bit in my mouth. They took a Rossi and put all sorts of  Midwest Industries accessories on it. Work was done by somebody called Mad Pig. And the completed rifle is worth --- (trumpet fanfare) $5,400.00.

Well, I guess if they own it they can set the value of it. They might have to pay me $5,000 to take it.

Does it come with a bayonet?  Where do you put the percussion caps?  No ramrod?

No but it does come with a laser guided missile attachment, and a light saber beam generator that fits any pic rail.

Hard to imagine anyone shelling out that kind of money for one of those, BUT if they gave it to me that would be another thing. Makes you wonder what the hell they’re smoking.

Steampunk meets Post-Apocalypse.  I really don't get the vitriol being poured out on it.  Heck, I think the AR is pretty darned ugly, but I don't mind 'em.   Especially the CA or NY compliant ones.

Did you click the “Why wait? Enter now!” button?

If you do you will probably see some blurb about providing a credit card to lock in …blah, blah, blah.
I bailed out.
A few moments ago I went back to get a screenshot of that BS and it’s not there now.
I have a hard time believing that “Rossi” any Rossi is worth $5400!

I entered their contest only to find they want you to jump through more hoops to “earn” points to increase your chances.

Here’s a screenshot:

I cancelled then visit Midwest Industries.

That took me to Midwest Industries. Those stocks are $270 for a butt stock.

I exited the entire mess.

It’s a damn shame Brownells has sunk to this level.

The $5,400 I'm sure is based on MSRP of the rifle and accessories, and probably labor to assemble.

Setting aside labor, street price of the parts is likely somewhat less. So tax write-offs for the donors; I really do not have a problem with that.

I also have no need or desire for it, but do wonder if it is built from quality components. Like the scope, is it high quality and appropriate for the rifle?

And as far as labor for putting it together, is it sighted in? Ready to run? Or does winning mean getting another project? I have enough projects.

The Scope is a Vortex.  Definitely not junk

It would make me wonder how to get rid of it without anyone thinking it was mine.

Kinda like that old joke about the Aggie walking down the street with a pig under his arm. Someone finally asked where he got that. Pig said "I won him in a raffle "

I think lever guns have become the new Legos for men. If I want to be insulting they’re the new Barbies for men.
I have to laugh when people get all angry, disgusted, flustered, sad or whatever emotion over changes, mods or embellishments people do to their guns. Key words being “their guns”, by the way.

The very first time I encountered this was at a Bullseye Match in 1983 at an indoor range in Torrance, CA.
I had recently purchased a new Colt Combat Gov’t series 70 .45 ACP for $317 at B&B Sales in Hollywood, CA. It may have been North Hollywood.

Photo from https://www.icollector.com/Scarce-Colt-Series-70-Combat-Government-Model-Semi-Automatic-Pistol-with-Box_i13751051

Anyway, my Colt was beautiful. The frame was matte finished black. The slide was matte on top to help with glare. The sides of the slide were glossy and blued to the point of blackness (^^^^ that photo doesn’t show how nice it was) It had a factory tuned trigger, Pachmayr wrap around rubber grips, a white outlined rear sight and it was mine.
My friend and I were at this match waiting for the semiauto match to begin. I was brand new to this. I had just moved to CA a couple of months earlier. My buddy Paul was a Navy buddy. He was teaching me about Bullseye matches.
We had our guns laying on the benches when this loudmouthed dude comes walking over. He sees my pistol and immediately starts into me telling me I must be a sissy needing an shiny bauble gun and about being some kind of “pu**y” needing rubber grips on a “Man’s gun”. He picks up my gun and I snapped! No one touches my guns without my permission. Not sure why, but to this day that gets me riled.
I can’t say what I said here. I was speaking Sailorese, but this guy puffs his chest out and the first words out of his mouth were “I’m a Marine…” and visions of my abusive father passed through my mind and I went for glory. My friend and two other guys grabbed me and the “Marine” scurried away. In my mind someone was going to jail and someone was going to the hospital.

I was disqualified before the match started.
Enough about that…

Well, that was my first experience with “embellished” guns, Barbie’s for men.

It's a "moped" gun. Fun to ride but I don't want my friends to see me on it.
