Cicadas double cycle year

Recommended Posts

Supposedly, this is the first time that both have surfaced at the same time since the early 1800s!

The last time I remember them being this intense was about 20 years ago. They were so thick that you could watch the dead ones blowing around on the highways like black snow!

Having ridden my motorcycle every day back then, I can tell you for a fact that they don’t taste good!!

I seen some place that was dipping them in batter and deep frying them!

We just called the locust when I was a kid.

First time I went to Cincinnati, mid 80's, the "17 year locusts" were out. They had cicada pizza, burgers and all kinds of stuff with cicadas on them. No way I was eating that crap. We went to a Skyline Chili while we were there, nasty stuff...purt sure I'd eat the cicadas before I'd eat that stuff again.

We have a much bigger cicada down here, when you hit one on a motorcycle, it hurts...a lot.;)

Same with June bugs and Bumble bees! Any bee in your helmet or up your sleeve sucks. Had a bee hit my glasses and got explode in a yellow gross splat once at 75mph, had to pull over immediately!

The worst face strike by an insect that I have ever experienced was while on the way to work one morning out on the highway.  I was probably running about 80mph and got hit on my bottom lip by a Rino Beetle!  INSTANT watering eyes and before I could get stopped, I could see my lower lip swelling!!

I got stopped and wiped the tears from my eyes, looked in one of the mirrors to see if I was bleeding, started to check traffic to see when I could get going and merge back onto the road, and right about then, the damned beetle up and flew off!!

If I could have gotten my pistol out of its holster, I’d have taken a shot at that stinkin’ bug, but I was too surprised to think of it!

Took two days for the swelling to go down and a week for the bruise to fade!!

Only thing worse is a bird strike!!

For sure :P! I've been hit 3 times! Blackbird in the left knee, explosion of feathers, no real discomfort. A Partridge flew up from the side of road right between the fairing and us, loud thud, lots of feathers, never actually hit us! On my way to a Bullseye shoot, a small bird got me in the forehead. That one startled me more than it hurt, but I rubbed my forehead for second and check my hand for blood. There wasn't any! Got to the range and was setting up my gear when another shooter asked "What happened to you?". Why,says I? You better go look in a mirror!!! Wholly crap:o, my whole face and into my hair were streaked with dried blood! Looked like my forehead exploded! Probably lucky it didn't stick in like a dart:lol:!

I watched a group of Harley riders hit a large cloud of love bugs on a toll road highway while they were doing about 70 - 75. No fairings, windshields or helmets. They pulled over right away. I'm sure they stung but they must have got an instant coating on their faces, necks and jackets of smashed love bugs. I understand they don't taste real good either.

I don't know about that, have you had pea size hail hitting you while doing around 65? That isn't fun at all, not just one hit but many.

I had a bird strike just short of the finish line at Beech Bend Raceway while I was driving an open cockpit dragster.

At 170mph, it’ll take the wind right out of you! I nearly passed out from lack of breath, (it hit me in the chest) but I made it to the second turnoff and just sat there and waited for my crew to come and get me.

I was covered in what remained of the bird and had just caught my breath when the truck got there with the guys. I was laid back in the seat and half of ‘em thought I was badly hurt until I started laughing and wheezing.

Took over an hour to get the car and my helmet cleaned up and the stuff on my fire suit liked to have NEVER washed out!  I wore it all gory for the rest of the day, until I was eliminated from the race.

Wow!! That's a great memory/story. Holy Cow! At that speed, you were damn lucky. And... skilled, to keep it together. Thanks

Sleet and hail aren’t really a problem if you’re prepared!

I keep this in the pocket of my leather jacket when I’m on the road.

Rule #1: Never leave without leather!!

Well lets just say I was young and stupid. Nice 750 Suzuki with no windshield and very fast. Hail came on suddenly and nowhere to hide.

Even sleet sucks! Worst hail I've done was about the size of baby canned peas! White out snow going over the Alleghenys was one of the scariest though!

Well like I said, young and stupid back then. Shorts and t-shirt were the attire for the day.

I still ride in a T shirt when it’s warm, but I ain’t never ridden in shorts or in sneakers!  Long pants and good leather boots have always been a matter of course!!

I may not always wear my leather, but it’s always there!!

I was passing a tractor trailer one time, and there was a loud BOOM, and a sudden pain in my upper chest. The trucks tire must have decapped, and a strip of rubber about a foot and a half long hit me.

I managed to pull over safely, still not knowing what had happened. I thought I had been shot! Because of the boom and the sudden instant pain. When I pulled up my shirt to check the damage, I had a welt from under my armpit all the way down to my belt line. It was purple, about  2+ inches wide and was swollen up about 3/4 to an inch high. Damn, that hurt for about a week.

I generally avoid passing trucks if at all possible now!!

Australian Cicadas

120 decibels

Cicadas are the loudest insects in the world and there are more than 200 species in Australia. It is thought that the sound produced by some communal species can act as a defence against predatory birds and some are even loud enough (120 decibels) to be painful to the human ear.

Mary and I were married just a couple of years and lived in a little bungalow in a dense grove of black oak. No AC so had to keep windows open and fans running.  Come the locus year and the sound drove us crazy.

Throw a few peppered Lubers in with them...they're not bad. Use old oil, tastes like chicken.
