Army uniform question

When did the Army change from those black hats of the civil War era to the kind of tan hats of the Spanish-American War era?

The movie is taking place in 1885. And these aren't the John Ford white hats, but they're certainly not the black hats either.

Curious as to whether they got it right or they kind of screwed the pooch.

While researching this subject this is what I have learned so far...

During and after the Mexican War there apparently was a lot of grumbling in the ranks about the black ("Hardee") hats getting too hot in the warmer climates. During the Civil War hats were so scarce that soldiers on both sides wore hats of every color and description both civilian and military types and after the war the Army eventually kind of looked the other way if troopers "on the frontier" in the hotter climates wore lighter colored hats as allowed by their company commanders. In 1882 the light colored campaign hat was  recognized Officially.

Hope this helped, Pard!

Alpo!!  For shame!!  You know it's Hollyweird!!  The only thing "They" know about the Period is at the end of a sentence.  Let us remember all the 1892 rifles without a fore end for a Henry.  And the Duke carrying a '92 in an 1866 setting.  Along with his trusty Colt 1873 SAA replica.  Sheesh.

as my wife always points out - "its only a movie" we are not supposed to judge , just enjoy the entertainment - which is exactly why we are not to listen to any lectures on real life from any actor - they are only pretending to entertain us ,

vote your consciences not some actors directions , they pretend to know - you actually do - think

John Ford took an awful lot of liberties when it came to uniforms. The best example is the Horse Soldiers. The troopers are more or less dressed as 1870s/1880s cavalry not any thing like the 1863 time period that the movie depicts.
