That, I have heard, is one of the reasons that Bill Hickok carried two pistols.

Every morning he would get a little pistol practice. He would walk out somewhere, and shoot one of his guns empty. Shooting rocks or sticks or whatever. And then when it was empty he would clean it and reload it. Once it was loaded he would holster it and pull out the other gun and shoot it dry. Then clean and reload it.

So while he was cleaning one gun, the other gun was loaded and ready. Just in case.

Classic example of the wisdom of Bupers

I was a police advisor in Afghanistan from 2004-2007. We had several mixed patrols (Navy and/or Air Force, led by a Marine or Army officer) stop at our training center in Kunduz. I remember harassing a Navy chief who was toting an M4 carbine by asking, "Where's your ship, Chief?" :D It seems that any serviceman, regardless of branch, with comms training, could wind up going through a crash course in infantry tactics and find him or herself stuck in the sandbox.
