This pic doesn't show him sunk in the mud to his crotch and the tank recovery vehicle coming to get him back of solid ground.

That's a pair of sunglasses on the ground by his elbow. Until I blew the picture up, I thought it was a cow flop.

That, I have heard, is one of the reasons that Bill Hickok carried two pistols.

 

Every morning he would get a little pistol practice. He would walk out somewhere, and shoot one of his guns empty. Shooting rocks or sticks or whatever. And then when it was empty he would clean it and reload it. Once it was loaded he would holster it and pull out the other gun and shoot it dry. Then clean and reload it.

 

So while he was cleaning one gun, the other gun was loaded and ready. Just in case.
