Alpo Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Not a meme, but I just came across this in the book and I thought it was funny enough it needed to be shared. Most of these Marines were pink-cheeked lads just out of boot camp. At boot camp, for reasons known only to the Marines, the first thing they teach the recruits is how to inject a word rhyming with “duck,” with proper blasphemous modifiers and amplifying phrases, into every declarative statement they make, except when speaking to military superiors directly. It may be that this is done to safeguard the boys’ morals. Such language is apt to get you thrown out of any well-run whorehouse in the western world, and most of these lads are too young to be patronizing such places. 1 2 Quote

During his interview he was asked what company. He replied US Navy. After the guy quit laughing he told Frankie that he was hired. 3 4 Quote

We are busy fighting and preparing to fight and use the Navy for some long range artillery jobs and other fire support. They also perform certain admin functions, mass supply, and medical and religious services. They do that because real Marines and some corpsmen and ladies face the tiger on his own turf and often by the tiger's rules. Remember that every Marine is a rifleman...and ever shall that be. Semper fi, Marines. 2 3 Quote

Basically, as you used fuel from the storage tank, that fuel was replaced with sea water. Sea water is heavier than fuel so the ship sat LOWER in the water as you used up fuel. And they were very smooth. 20 foot seas were nothing. Fond memories. BS 2 Quote

BS That's a Ticonderoga-class cruiser -- check the SPY-1. Since the Tico hull was based on the Spru-can's, it's likely the compensation was the same. Never was on a Tico, but I've been told they didn't ride as well as the Spruance (Tico had more weight in the superstructure). 1 Quote

I was on the DD-965 and DD-992, each was about 2 hrs old when I went aboard. The 965 was much faster due to radar absorbing materials placed on the superstructure of the 992. But, I'll take either of them compared to the ride of a FFG. I made it 18 years before I got sea sick. I'll leave it there. BS 1 Quote

I'm currently reading a Casca novel. For those who don't know of him, Casca was the legionnaire who put the spear in Jesus's side. And Jesus cursed him. He would remain as he was until Jesus comes back. World War II has just ended and he has joined the French Foreign Legion. He and a bunch of other recruits are put on a ship and sent from France to North Africa. Most of the other recruits get seasick, but one of the benefits of his curse is it doesn't happen to him. So he helps out his fellow legionaires. By eating their rations, since they obviously could not do it themselves. And you shouldn't let good food go to waste. 2 Quote
