A question that I never considered before...

That’s the way it’s listed on most menus!!

The payload is between two pieces of bread, so, most likely, it qualifies as a sandwich…

Of course it is. It's a piece of meat in between two slices of bread. It meets the original definition as invented by the Earl.

But it's not between two pieces of bread. It's on a bun that is a single piece of bread that is split up the middle. Now if you were to separate the bun into two separate pieces, THEN it would be a sandwich.

You have to take into consideration that every slice of bread was once part of a loaf! Therefore, a bun that’s split in two is just two slices of a small loaf.  Just like a “sub” sandwich or a “Po Boy”!!

But the bun is still a single piece of bread. Until you separate the bun into two, THEN it's slices of bread. A sub has the bun sliced into two separate pieces.

You obviously haven’t had many hotdogs lately!!  Dern near every single one lately has had the dog trying to escape out the bottom where the two halves have parted company!!  <_<

Same thing goes for the sub shops!!  They’ll hand you the sangwidge all wrapped up in paper ‘n’ the bread is still one piece! That is ‘til ya’ take a bite or two!

Obviously you have never bought cheap store-brand hot dog buns.

I certainly have had cheap buns before. That's why I spend the extra buck and get the good buns.

Yeah, me too.

Store brand hamburger bun, name brand hamburger bun. No difference really. Store brand sometimes a little smaller, but still the same basic thing.

But a store brand hot dog bun - and let me add this little bit from my own experience, Ball Park hot dog buns are just as crappy as store brand, but cost twice as much - the store brand bun feels crumbly and almost always comes apart at the hinge.
