The cat might have landed on it's feet but at that distance the cat would have likely broken a few bones if not for the people that caught it.

I agree. There was a cartoon I saw back in the early 80s.

 

There's two guys dressed like World War I pilots. In the background you can see an airfield and a couple of biplanes. On the ground between the two men is a squished cat. But you can tell because of how his legs are and how his head is that the cat was upright when he became squished. Feet down.

 

The caption was something like, "SEE - I TOLD YOU. PAY UP"
