Relaxed summer heat dress code?

Roofers all wear long sleeve cotton shirts because they are cooler.  I tried it and they are correct.  But you have to drink enough water to generate some sweat.  Water is the key to staying alive/cool.

Funny you should mention that. Our 32 year old roof is getting repaired. This guy and his son started early Monday morning and say they’ll be finished Friday evening. They’re both pretty much covered from head to toe.

I wear loose long sleeved shirt long pants & boots and palm leaf hat.
I drink a bottle of Gatorade in the morning before match starts. Then at a minimum 1 bottle of water every stage. After 3-4 stages take an electrolyte pill. I don’t pee during the match. I sweat like the proverbial painted lady in a house of worship.
It was 102 when I left match on July 8.
when I got home as I pulled my shirt over my head I almost passed out. I was pretty ripe!

yes it’s just a game, and I thought about sitting last stage out, but had a great time shooting that day.

that match was my SASS 12 yr anniversary match. I remember my first match. Was nervous, did not drink water, by the time I got in my truck to leave my hands were cramping so badly I could hardly hold the wheel. I stopped at corner store, got big bottle of Gatorade & 2 bottles water. Sat in truck drinking for almost an hour before I could safely drive. (But could not wait to go again!)

South Central NC.  Our relaxed dress code was

required: cowboy hat, cowboy boots

what you put in the middle was your business.

I agree that I would just a soon wear lightweight cotton long sleeves & skirt as sunscreen.

Pet Peever: I have never understood why a "long-sleeved shirt" was a requirement, BUT you could have it rolled up way past the elbow as frequently seen here. EITHER a short sleeve shirt should be allowed OR the long-sleeved shirt shouldn't look like one.

A number of years ago, there was a big controversy over a top competitor shooting with rolled up sleeves!

Here in central SC (Columbia) where the only thing between us and hell is a screen door we allow a relaxed summer dress code. Shorts, t shirts, and tennis shoes are the norm. Our only requirement is no flip flops.

I'm in my 60s and have had a heat stroke and no matter what I wear I'm miserable but I love the game and I show up and work. While at a match in the upstate a few weeks ago by the 5th stage I looked around trying to figure out where the posse was and over half were sitting in the back of the bay under a shed roof. If it's too hot to come to the line and help out then it's too hot to come to the line to shoot. Stay home.

One of the silliest reasons to get one's panties in wad over.

Some clubs that we have shot at offer the summer "dressdown".  Our club simply doesn't say anything.  People know what they can take and most stay home.  I shoot classic so I never dress down.

@PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Overalls are legal I believe. If a fellow wore a t-shirt underneath said overalls, would that be considered an undershirt and be legal or would it fall under the no T-shirt rule and be illegal?

Not legal if exposed to that degree.

- Short sleeve shirts (male competitors only)

- Short sleeve tee shirts, long sleeve tee shirts, and tank tops for all competitors. (Long sleeve Henley type shirts with buttons are acceptable.)

Seen a pard or 2 wear their Union suits at a Castaway Cowboys match.

While I personally will never wear shorts to a cowboy match, I don't see where the SHB prohibits such. AFAIK, pants are only mentioned in the B-Western costuming clause. But I am not even sure if shorts would be illegal in BW by the wording: "Pants must be jeans, ranch pants, or pants with flap over the rear pocket, keystone belt loops, and/or piping or fringe." So, would these (rather hot) pants be technically legal if worn with a belt :

Anyone top that?

By the way, his alias was MOON!! Appropriate!

If ya saw IROT in a grass skirt and coconut shell bra there would be no question.

When the summer heat sometimes gets brutal for us here, we do institute casual dress for the match.   Cowboy hat, shorts and T-shirt approved.   Rather have people come out and shoot and survive vs having issues just for a local match.

Never seen adjustments at a state or above.

A long sleeve henley style t-shirt keeps my arms from getting sunburned and still looks "cowboyish" plus, when the splash back inevitably happens, its not hitting bare skin.  I wear  pair of of jeans (because it keeps me from getting sunburned and protects from splashback) and a pair of work boots.  I top it off with a wide brim straw hat  that I can periodicly hit with a few sprays from a squirt bottle to help circulate cool air around my head - all technically "dressing down" from the usual thicker cowboy short, vest, canvas pants, and thick fur hat while still meeting what I believe are age based costuming rules.

I also drink several bottles of water throughout the match as opposed to tossing back a thermos of coffee hidden away in my gun cart...

I stay cool in the heat, I don't vioolate the spirit of the costume rules, and I'm practicing good range safety habits.

I am 73 and the first one to pickup a spotters flag at each stage. It is very frustrating when you are in a posse where half of them only come to shoot and you have the beg someone to take the flag so you can go shoot. The last few matches I was either the last or next to last shooter at every stage because no one was wanting to relieve me from spotting. This makes for a long day when you work practically the whole match as a spotter and only get a break long enough to shoot. Our temps here are 100+ most days and we just broke a record for the most consecutive days over 105+. I shoot the next 3 weekends and the weather doesn't show to be getting any cooler so it is gonna be a hot time at the matches.

Ya, just ANOTHER of those "clarifications" that never seem to make it into the rule book and most people never hear about.

There was a shooter from back east, I think maybe Maryland and name possibly was No One.  Anyway, saw him shoot at Winter Range one year and I believe a picture of him at EOT in the Chronicle and he shot bare foot, bib overalls, and NO shirt.  Don't remember if he either had a hat or if he did what kind it was.  Nat'l Championship and World Championship and was allowed to compete dressed that way.

I don't think the rules require a shirt, they just outlaw short sleeve and t-shirts.  Also, no footwear is required.  (excluding B-Western and Classic).

And very famous movie and TV star, Burt Reynolds, many times while in the longest running TV western, Gunsmoke, wore a sleeveless shirt like Mongo in Blazing Saddles, probably one of the greatest comedies and best western comedy ever made.

Always believed Cowboy Action Shooting was a fun, fantasy, playing cowboy like when we were kids, shooting sport.

I have an old Henley shirt that says,  "COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING IS THE MOST FUN YOU CAN HAVE WITH YOUR PANTS ON"

And the day I am not having fun at a CAS match is the day I will hang up my lone spur.
