Navy question

Aboard a ship at sea.

 

You discover a crime has happened (in this TV show it was a murder but, hey, it's a cop show so of course it's a murder). At 3 in the morning.

 

Who would you inform?

 

Pretty sure that busting the captain out of bed would be a bad plan.

Underway you’d contact the bridge or grab the roving watch and report it to him…or her, in today’s Navy. 
 

In port you’d notify the quarterdeck.

I figure that whoever you tell would tell his boss, who would tell his boss, who would tell his boss. That might have it all the way up to the XO, and he would tell the Captain.

 

But you wouldn't tell the Captain.

 

Just like you see a hit and run on base. You report it to the apes, and they kick it up the line and eventually the commanding general hears about it. But you don't go calling the commanding general and tell him that someone got run over.

The OD would be the more obvious person to tell FIRST.

Then it would proceed up the chain of command as mentioned above.

 

About the ONLY way 'you' would inform the captain is if he is standing nearby and/or if its the XO

who is dead.    AND, you must make sure the captains life is not also in danger.

Of course, if you are the OD or the XO, then you could wake the captain.

 

If you are on a ship with nuclear stuff, you would also consider notifying the Marine contingency

'security team'.     An 'intruder' violation may be imminent.

My gut tells me that you would report it to the watch commander.

Yup, my apologies, Pat. Didn’t mean to imply they were separate entities.  I was just putting a human face on it. The bridge is a place, the OD is a person in/on it.

First Comminissed officer or Shore patrol you see on your way to inform the Bridge officer. If someone else is with you then they go for help and you keep watch
