I am looking to try some coated bullets and need some info.

Does the color of coating matter?

Who would you recommend to purchase from?

Anything to do different running them thru a Dillon 650?

Thanks.

I buy bullets from Bullets By Scarlett and also CSA Bullets.  Both are great vendors who are sponsors at SASS matches and make quality bullets.  The color of the coating is "shooter's choice".....really makes no difference.  I like mine coated red. I load all of them on a Dillon 650,, no different than uncoated lead bullets.

Lots of vendors are selling coated bullets. Many cater specifically to CAS and others cater to the other shooting sports.

Basically you have two types. Moly coated and polymer coated. Both types have Pros and Cons. A google search will give you lots of opinions.

AFAIK Moly coated bullets come in only one color. There are Pros and Cons. A google search will give you lots of opinions.

Polymer Coated bullets come in several colors. There are a few different brands of coatings. Again there are Pros and Cons.  A lot of shooters use the colors to make it easy to tell different loads apart.

A big advantage to coated bullets is that they can be used with bullet feeders while lubed bullets tend to cause issues when used with bullet feeders.

On Missouri Bullet Company, if you put in sass in the coupon code, they knock an extra 5% off.  I've had good luck with fast shipping from them.  A second recommendation for Bullets by Scarlett as well.

'Bullets by Scarlett' is my favorite.    She supports and sponsors things at big matches

and she is a very active SASS shooter.

She and her favorite gun slinger, Tommy, are great folks all around.

I'm lucky that I have Bustin Head Lead shooting at my club so I run their bullets, color doesn't matter to me, so I get whatever color they are running. Work great in my 550.

Hi Ya Gambler!!  Thanks for the excellent service for some '97 parts.  Personally, I get my coated bullets from Bullets By Scarlett, or Badman Bullets, or Missouri Bullet Co.  Coated bullets run no differently thru my DILLONS than any other bullets,  Very Simple.  I load 'em for APP and Smokeless (very little smokeless).  Found coated bullets don't play well with BP.  You still need lube.  I have no preference for Colour except I think Red makes the cartridges look like Lipstick.  Kinda cute.  I pay no attention at all to the coating being used.  Get bullets, load bullets, shoot bullets.  When we're shoting at 6 to 10 yards, makes no difference atall.

An advantage to "Hytek" coating is no lead exposure loading and your seating die doesn't get gunked up with bullet lube. They are sized after coating, thus they load like any other bullet.

I’ve used Bullets by Scarlett, Chey Cast, and Slippery Bullets and Reloading. All have been great, but I prefer Slippery Bullets for all the color choices.  Scarlett gives free hugs with every order also.

Most of the bigger outfits have coated bullets and lots of different bullet weights and shapes. Some still have standard lubed along with the coated bullets. Some of the smaller companies make equally good bullets but offer far fewer choices in calibers and bullet weights and shapes.

I wasn't aware of all of the vendors that sell them. Lots of good vendors that support CAS and now I get started on selecting bullets. Thanks for all of the replys and information.

Another advantage of coated bullets is that the lubricant can't melt during hot summer months.  When my mailman dumps bullet packages in my driveway to lay in the hot sun for hours there is no wax lubricant that might melt.

I have bought coated bullets from many of the vendors mentioned in this thread.  They all shot well at CAS distances.  My preference is for softer bullets and free shipping.  I sometimes stop at the Bang and Clang's foundry in Mimbres to buy a year's supply.  Get on Chey-Casts and Bang and Clang's mailing list for discounts given to repeat customers.  Find out if a caster attends matches you shoot.  They will often deliver bullets to a match.

I have no color preferences for coated bullets.  For me a coated bullet indicates a smokeless round and a plain lead bullet indicates a black powder round.

I have Acme, Slippery, and CheyCast, and they all fly straight downrange, are easy to load, and the colors are irrelevant (whatever they have and sell works fine for me).  I also have the honor of using fellow club member Cheyenne Ranger's coated boolits and he makes them in many colors of the rainbow so they're excellent for unicorn and pixie hunting, in addition to CAS.

There can be a pretty big variation in the cost per bullet for the same bullet from different manufacturers. Some include the shipping cost in the stated price. Others don't. Most of them have sales, free shipping, 10% off, multiple case discounts. As long as the bullets are of similar quality I just look at the final price per bulket.

Lots of good bullet company names mentioned.  I have personally used  Scarlet's, Chey, Band N Clang,  and, Bustin Head.  Other favorites are Cimmaron (yes, still in business) and Naildriver ( who a has few .358 weights) .

I like color choices.  A big plus when separating BP and smokeless.  Especially so Sassy does not get the smokey loads of mine.  I usually tell her if it is red, like our 125 Scarlets and Cimarron, she can shoot it.  If gold (105 ND), dark reddish copper (135 & 147 Cims), or green (125 BH) best not.  I like Cimarrons gun metal 105s for Sassy also.  I find fine accuracy with all mentioned.  Scarlett's 125 and Cims 135 &147 do not have crimp groove if you prefer.  I find it of no particular advantage other than visual reference( if 38s I recommend to keep a minimum of 1.45" OAL).  All mentioned like BP just find in my tests.  From my tests I have not a thing negative about a single one of those companies.
