Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
I remember getting one of those in the 60s. I was in ROTC and most if not all the officers that were instructing the ROTC classes had never fired one. I had the gun but no one had any ammo in the local gunshops back then. One weekend at a rifle match our ROTC team was shooting at I managed to trade some .308 National Match ammo for a case of 5.56 from an Air Force team. The next week everyone on the rifle team and the ROTC instructors went out to the local National Guard range and fired a few rounds. Had to sell it when I graduated but the Army gave me a new one. Crooked River Pete, SASS 43485
The original SP1's are over 50 years old, eligible for C&R. I think the last first year production one I saw at auction brought close to $4000.
watab kid
yup - ive had mine for a bit over two decades but saw my first in the mid 70s - a friend working with a police department had bought one because he had been exposed to it , i gotta admit mine started life as an M16 tho - just got a semi-lower added , his was an original AR 15 by colt , mine is just a colt upper with a DPMS lower - still wearing the original stock and handguard tho ,
J.D. Daily
I have had my Sporter for 24 years bought it new. While I used the M16A1 in the Army I didn't feel the need to own one until Gray Davis replaced Pete Wilson as CA's governor. The inmates under the capitol dome had passed a update of Roberti-Roos the last year of Wilson's administration and it was vetoed. I knew "Pay to Play Gray" would sign it so before the legislature passed it I visited LGS's in the Bay Area. Found two in the Old West Gun Room in El Cerrito. EBR's weren't typically found there. The owner said the Colt sales rep insisted he stock 2 Sporters to get a few SAA's. Except for an adjustable gas block to prevent dented brass it is original. I added a picrail adapter to the carry handle to mount an illuminated LPVO to compensate for old eyes.
