Disappearing parts UPDATE

Yesterday at the  loading table I discovered one of my Colts was missing the whole entire base pin screw and spring assembly! Gone!! I had to borrow a pistol to get through the shoot. I replaced it when I got home with the assembly from a 2nd Gen I have. Works fine. I then tried to put an Uberti cattlemen assembly in the 2nd Gen. I couldn’t get it to work!! I have to order a whole new base pin spring assembly for a Colt.
Peacemaker Specialist is the only place I could think of.
I’m still trying to figure out how I lost that whole assembly! Grrrrrr………

My pre-match to-do list includes checking all the screws.   When I shoot SAA type guns, that especially includes those base-pin latch parts and the ejector housing screw.  I've only seen a few folks lose the latch parts, but the ejector housing seems to happen more often.   5 or 6 years ago I lost some part, don't recall which, but a friend had a big magnet on a stick in his truck and that found it!

I wonder if Pietta parts might work?  Right now my Colts and my one Pietta are 90 miles away or I could check.

I've actually been thinking about purchasing a used rolling magnet bar (like the kind roofers use) for just such a purpose. Haven't seen one recently though for a decent price.

I looked all over in the area I clean my guns and couldn’t find it! This is the first time in 26 years of shooting single actions that this happened! Unbelievable! :o

Found out that with the exception of one screw, Pietta parts are not interchangeable with Colts; this from Cimarron.  Try Numrich Arms, also.

Good to know, Tex, but which screw?? :)

Okay, I'm reunited with my guns and did a little testing.  The parts on the left are Pietta, Colt on the right.  Notice they are configured differently, with the screw that goes through the frame being on the right side on the Pietta, and on the left on the Colt.  The spring is on the left side on both, but the Pietta nut is countersunk just a bit to hold the end of the spring.  And as you can see the part of the screw that goes through the frame is  a tad longer on the Pietta.  So here's the interesting part.  The Pietta parts fit in the Colt (3rd gen is what I tried) and seem to work fine and hold the base pin securely with no fore and aft movement.  The Colt latch will fit in the Pietta but will not push in far enough to release the base pin.  The Colt parts protrude from about equal distances from the frame on both sides, while the Pietta parts protrude more on the left than the right, but this is the same way they fit in the Pietta.  Interesting.

The one on the left is very similar to Ruger.

Look guys please stop making this a Ruger thing. How many times do I have to say I don’t care for Rugers? This can happen with any gun, this was MY fault not the gun.

So far, I've lost/broken the following while shooting my Ubertis:

  • Ejector rod assembly with the screw gone forever
  • Base pin screw assembly, the whole thing went missing. Luckily, the hardened one from VTI was waiting at home for installing
  • Broken cylinder stop spring

Always bring a 3rd revolver to the match!! ;)

Peacmakers specialists in California has the parts in stock. They have parts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen parts. They also do complete action jobs and refinshing etc.

Ed Janus passed away a few years ago but his wife kept the busy going.

I had a problem putting the base pin catch screw back in as it would not tighten. Looking at Abelines picture it shows the screw on the right side and the spring and nut on the left. The guns schematic drawing shows the opposite. It has the screw and spring on the left and the nut on the right. I did'nt really care as I don't use the gun anyway, but I found it crazy as it would not fit.Looking at your picture, I will try it again. Correct me if I'm all wrong about this.

All my Colts, I have 4, and my Uberti have the part with the spring going in on the left side. I don't know if that helps or not.

Every single action revolver I have ever worked on had that spring on the left side.

This includes Rooogers :lol::P
