The size of the target plays into the difficulty just as much as distance!

True, but at just 200 yards, given the average age of a SASS shooter, I suspect that the shooter's eyesight is a much bigger factor than the firearm's ability to hit a target small enough to be a challenge for the rifle and its ammunition! Any decent rifle and ammo combination defined as "long range" usable, except maybe a musket, could easily hit a playing card at 200 yards, but i doubt even a young keen-eyed shooter could SEE the darn target then!

Why bags? Prone using sticks would be better to allow each shooter to adjust the height to be comfortable.

I suspect, but don't obviously know for sure, that the reason prone might not be allowed is simply because it would not be within the "spirit of the game", because 1870s buffalo hunters, soldiers or Indians could not use a prone position on the typical prairie landscapes, because they would not be able to see due to the tall grasses!

We use sand bags shooting from a bench. No one has ever had a problem with it.

Come on down South and play the game with us!

Is scoring total hits or most hits in a fixed time. Black powder shooters don't do well inn timed events..

Scoring is total hits no pesky timer involved ;)

You call 200 yards "long range"?? :)

You must be limited there by the length of the physical range facility!

Here in Alberta, Canada (Texas of the North) we see "long range" as 300 to 1000 yards!

We call it as long as we have!:D

 Thanks
