Marlins with old style ejectors

I picked up a Marlin 44 magnum made in 1979 or 1980 with the old circa 1900 style ejector spring.

I have picked up three replacement ejector springs, new old stock.

Aside from this rather weak spring design, are there any other considerations for it regarding its reliability for SASS?

I have not shot a match in ages. I have sold my primary shotguns and my primary rifle but have left all of my revolvers, a standard length and youth length Stoeger, a Widder tuned Marlin and the aforementioned Marlin in 44.

My second batch of kids are coming of age and I need to teach them a few things . They are 5, 8,and 12 years old.

Time for a new name…

You're talking about the long spring right, rather than the short spring that's the same length as the ejector?

Yes, its a thin one piece spring. Marlin used a bunch of leftover parts in the 44 mag models in the late 70's, but the springs were old parts stock from circa 1900 era 1894's.  My understanding is that they were primarily used int he 44 magnum models.

My '82 Marlin is in its second spring, but orginal ejector.

Bought this rifle new in 1982. Has several thousands of rounds through it.

The spring in mine, best my research indicates these were stopped being used in 1980 once the old parts were depleted.

Lumpy, is this yours? If it is a constant source of problem and with this style difficult to source now, I may relegate this rifle to hunting and casual use.

I'm 'confused'.

DDD, you answered "YES" to Rusty's question about the long spring.

But, you showed us a picture of a very old style that is 1 piece.

The 'long spring' Ejectors had a spring about 2" long and extended into a small slot beside the

chamber entrance at 9 o'clock position.

Which spring are you actually inquiring about?

The newer style springs won't substitute for the style you posted in the picture UNLESS you

drill a whole in the receiver.

The 'long spring' style Ejector will should work in your rifle, BUT... you probably should clip off

the spring and make it shorter.   When I get those LONG SPRING style Ejectors, I cut off

any length that is longer than the actual Ejector body.

Hope your Widdermatic is running good.

So there’s short, long and old….

mine is the old one piece, as pictured.

The receiver lacks the hole and the milled out part for the spring is quite different than the one on my CB.

Could you post a couple pictures of the milled slot?

DDD,

Actually, there is a long,  a shorter version, AND.... TWO older ones.

And I might add, there may be more but right now, my mind can only think of 4 styles.

The one in your picture is one of the older ones.

Good luck on finding a replacement for it.

Parts for ANY Marlin are nearly impossible to get.
