Both sides of the street. Two lanes down to one lane.   That's  a little  more  than  24", I'd say that has  a significant impact on motor vehicle traffic. 

 

Heck,  just that 3 foot safety buffer is more than 24".  Even on some of the streets that didn't get all the other fancy stuff it's enough to take away a lane in each direction.  Plus eliminating parking and loading zones.

I agree. The merging sometimes results in double-taps (usually due to slow Internet connections) getting merged which is harder for a routine admin sweep to clean up.

 

The reason I don't like merging is sometimes a thread has several lines of thought. I may quote one member and post my reply. Then quote another member for an unrelated comment. These get merged and it messes up thread flow. It also makes it harder for a followup quote and reply from either of the quoted members as they must now delete the part of my reply not related to them. And if they don't (an many do not), then flow is further disrupted.

 

All-in-all, auto-merging posts disrupts and creates work for both members and admins.
