I think a lot of that aggression...which is not okay....is because many people see large amounts of tax dollars spent on these kinds of things that cater to a tiny percentage of the population, and as you point out, are part of a larger anti-motor vehicle political movement,  while the rest of the roads are crumbling away.

We've gone from bike lanes that the "Spandex Mafia" didn't use, to bike lanes plus a painted 3 foot "Safety Zone" line and the 3 Foot Law that motor vehicle drivers are supposed to observe.   As often as not I see bikies using that buffer as the bike lane, and crowding the left side of it,  which forces drivers to change lanes to maintain that 3 foot buffer.  And now these,  taking away a lane, which slows traffic, takes away parking, loading, and standing spots.  What next?

EDIT TO ADD

Sonoma County is a destination spot for cyclists.  For the most part they're pretty reasonable on the scenic back roads.  But there are a fair number that take it upon themselves to regulate traffic by spreading out across the lane to prevent cars from passing them because they think it's unsafe.   And then laughing and making gestures at the drivers.

On the other hand,  was driving on a very twisty road and came up to a local bike club out for a morning ride.  No bike lane,  no real room to pass.  They kept single file, as far to the right as possible almost to the point of going off the pavement- and would wave people around them when the guy riding point could see it was clear for some of the car to pass.

A lot of your points are what is happening here. I have pretty much given up riding on the streets near the city center.  Like the exercise but don’t want to get squashed to get it. Plenty of jerks on both sides who have drawn dividing lines between themselves. Like my car, like my bike, different uses for each, then along comes a “intellectual” who feels a need to dictate how things that have worked for years need to be changed and now nobody gets along. BTW we had bike lanes on many of our streets for at least the last 20 years, no problems, now as we have grown from rural to urban everyone seems to want it their way or no way. Have a nice bike path system that runs from Palisade to Fruita, some of the most exciting mountain bike trails in the country both here and within 90 miles over in Moab so cycling is a big deal around here but it is really sad what is going on now.

Most road taxes are paid by motor vehicles and commercial carriers.  I am unqualified to posit on taxes paid by bicyclists

Well as both a car and a bicycle owner I pay plenty of fuel taxes when I use my car. Sometimes I prefer to use my bike rather than the car to get around, does that negate the taxes I have already paid? Just asking.

My Dad was the City Engineer of a small to medium sized city near a major tourist attraction in Florida. Quite some time after he had retired, I was visiting him and rode with him to get pizza at place that (at the time) had some of the best pizza in Florida.

We came to a roundabout and without thinking I said "Who was the a*****e that thought this was a good idea. His response was "That would be me."

The pizza was damn good.

Personalty, I'd like to see some sort of registration and fee system for cyclists age of 18 and older.  With these specialty lanes taking lanes away from motor vehicles it would be nice to have the bicycles kicking in something towards bicycle specific lanes and markings.

I also wouldn't object to licensing, even just a section on the DMV test and a new "class" on your drivers license.

Just brought that here to Grand Junction. On a pair of two lane one way streets (4th and 5th) took out one lane of traffic on each AND all the parking on that side of the street. Local business is down 21% in three months. Brought about by an advocacy group of about 40 (very wealthy) people from the state that must not be named. Local community billboard internet pages are running over 90% opposed but these are here now and the group is already planning how to implement this for the next two streets (6th and 7th), one of which is a very busy artery through downtown and central Grand Junction. Stated purpose is to make it safer for cyclists to go downtown. Also to "beautify" downtown by eventually banning all automobiles on Main street. Here observers (both city employees and independent persons) report an average of 30-35 cyclists use these per day, as opposed to hundreds of cars.

As a cyclist myself actions like this make some people very aggessive and antagonistic towards us. Per city records  there are about 2-3 auto/bicycle accidents in this area avg. per year so maybe it is safer IDK. BTW estimated cost is at slightly over $800,000. Not all ideas are good especially when there was no problem to begin with.

Around my neck of the woods they are always spending mega thousands on bike trails and lanes that bicyclists never asked for. Within a year they are abandoned due to lack of use! I'm sure somebody is happy they wasted all that money instead of actually fixing the damn road. No offense, but bicyclists drive me nuts on the road! Even if they have their own lane, they're still all over the road and oblivious to traffic. But pay plenty of attention to their damn phones. But they are mostly Ivy league college types. I'm missing the funny in this one. Unless it's the fact that the upright on the notes changes from the right side of the note to the left side of the note as it goes from the left side to the right side of the page. And even that I don't see why it would be funny.

I still thought it was a sandwich, until I recognize the Nike swoosh. Can't understand why the sole of that shoe is green though.

The bike lanes in my area takes about 24” from lanes that cars can easily navigate plus, cyclists drive cars too and pay the same taxes as everyone else. Why should cyclists be double taxed? The bike lanes have no effect on traffic.

They just put bike lanes on the road over by my house. Made the road wider by about 3 ft on each side. So now there's less shoulder between the edge of the road and the ditch, if you have to pull off the road for whatever reason.

And they have a sign up that says bicyclists can also use the car lane. So we use my taxes to build them a special lane, but they don't have to ride in it. But if I drive in it I can get ticketed.

I noticed as I have gotten older, that people that ride bicycles generally need to get pulled over by the cops two or three times a day.

I'm driving down the road. There's a bicycle in the bicycle lane at the right edge of the road. The cross street has a traffic light and it is red. So we are stopped. Even though there is no traffic coming on the cross street, the light is red so we are stopped. And the bicycle comes riding up and just rides across the street. Didn't even slow down, let alone stop. Just ran the light. Because he's a bicycle, so car laws don't apply.

And that seems to be the attitude of bike riders. Car laws don't apply to them because they're not driving a car.

Look closely. Those are people walking in sand and their shadows make the notes.

Like drivers, bike riders can be a**holes too.
