Around here they have decided that all intersections that had a through road and stop signs on the side road will now be four way stops. Seems like every 1/4 mile you have another stop sign. In addition almost no one here seems to know who has the right of way when there is more than one vehicle at the intersection. As this is the South, where everyone is to polite for words, it is “After you Alfonse”. So no one goes until everyone tries to go at the same time. I’m a northerner, so that is one thing I’ve known from the first days of having a drivers license. “You first, after ME”. They need to move it or loose it. Just kidding. Although I did have to learn to slow down a little. What passes for normal driving in NY and NJ scares people around here. CJ 4 1
Warden Callaway
Big deal around here is round-abouts. In some places stacked or multiple lanes. People don't know how to do 4-way stops.

Looks like you get to the ramp for 9 East in one direction and for 10 East in the other. I like those RR Crossing arms.

People don't know how to do 4-way stops. I’m originally from NJ perhaps the worst State for incorrect and dangerous use of round-abouts (called circles in my day). Multi layered and main road has straight through right of way while side roads have to yield to the main road ROW even inside the circle. At least in NC they keep it to one layer of circle and they have absolute ROW within the circle. No stopping in the circle, exit is unobstructed, bypass lanes (right turn only) when available must yield to people exiting the circle if there is not a two lane road beyond the circle. As it is there is a big fight going on nearby about a large circle. The DOT wants to get rid of it because of backups caused during rush hour periods. The local gentry have paid big money for years to have the circle beautified with flowers regularly replaced to keep the blooms going. For them it is a historic landmark. I will say that the DOT plans have been presented at public meeting. They look like a disaster to me. I am not a Traffic Engineer, just an Electrical Engineer, but their plans are going to be very confusing to drivers. Sure, once you learn the layout it won’t be so bad, but if you are just passing through it looks like a Esher Painting where ‘you go up the down staircase sideways’. End of rant. I really don’t have a dog in that fight. The four way stops are enough for me. CJ

CJ When I first lived in D.C., a friend told me that a defensive driver wouldn’t survive. You had to be aggressive if you wanted to get anywhere. And those traffic circles are maddening. Sometimes you have go around several times just to get to the street you want. Then it was on to New York City, where aggressive driving is a highly developed and necessary skill. Everyone does it so there’s a kind of predictable harmony to it. I once saw 3 lanes of traffic on 5th Avenue move in unison like a school of fish when a cab pulled away from the curb. They weren’t being polite, they were just acting on instinct, as the cab pulled out without warning. It’s a beautiful kind of chaos. 😊 Now I live in the Kansas City area where every trip on the surrounding interstates is random terror. Worst drivers in the country? St. Louis. I'd swear that Traffic Engineers do their surveys of traffic patterns at 0300 on Wednesdays. "Yeah, this proposed 200 unit apartment complex will have no effect on the traffic here. I say we approve it. No need to upgrade the roads, either." Edited November 4 by Subdeacon Joe 3

The suburbs of NYC is where I learned to drive, with many trip into the CITY. There is only one CITY in northern NJ or southern NY. No need to explain that you mean NYC. Before they closed the upper level of the West Side Highway I once saw a cab and another car share a one car entry ramp up to the highway. Once they were onto the roadway the other car had to literally push the cab sideways to disengage. The Cabby had no problem, that cab was so beat you couldn’t see any new damage from the encounter. I think I can still handle the traffic in the CITY, just don’t want to. Thankfully I don’t need to anymore. CJ 1 1

Commuted to the City daily - 42nd St & 3rd Ave. Only drove on weekends, mostly to the burbs like Jones Beach, Hicksville, Westbury et al. There were periodic trips to the City after business hours for entertainment venues. Riding the subways then was too spooky. We called the Long Island Expressway (LIE) the “Long Island Distressway - the world’s longest parking lot.” Took the kids to NY 30 or so years ago. My then 10-year old son son said at the time, “all you do in New York is give $20 bills to people in little booths.” 😊

Alpo
53 minutes ago, Pat Riot said: Actually, after a very short time of working at the bank, all that stuff is is stuff you count. We had a branch office at the Air Force Base. 20 miles away. And every Thursday I would make a run out there and take them supplies. Envelopes and paper and Scotch tape and crap like that. And one day they give me a sack with $10,000 in it and tell me to take that when I go out on my Thursday run. Think about that for just a minute. Give $10,000 cash to an 18 year old kid and have him drive 20 miles by himself. So I get out to the other bank and I come inside with this big heavy box and they pretty much snatched it out of my hand and look in it and said, "where's the money?" I told 'em it was out in the car, and they kind of freaked. "Why didn't you bring it in first?????" I told 'em I brought the heavy stuff in first. Because that 10 grand wasn't money. The 375 a month I was making was money. That 10 grand was just something you needed to keep track of.
