Outlaw Gambler
I have an original Winchester 1873 receiver and forearm cap that I would like to have done. Any recommendations? I am aware of Turnball and while their work is beautiful their cost is prohibative for me and the time frame exceeds my estimated life span. Thanks. Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Longhunter Supply was doing true bone-ash case hardening, a few years ago, Probably still does it. The work I saw was VERY nice, and reasonable. good luck, GJ
Warden Callaway
I got 3 Colts done by Spring Creek Armory in Ten Sleep Wyoming. When I was out there last fall, he showed me a Winchester Miroku he had color cased. It was beautiful. https://springcreekarmory.com/ The bottom Colt was done by him. Top new. Creeker, SASS #43022
On an existing frame - do you actually need "hardening" or just coloring? I have done some "low cost" case coloring by torch heating items and dribbling automatic transmission fluid on it. I had pretty decent looking results - your needs or mileage may differ. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try this on scrap steel before considering it on any firearm parts. I take no responsibility for your results.

I think metal temp and letting the ATF flow over the metal can vary the appearance quite a bit - I didn't get the "spots" quite as much as yours - but I found that you can "layer" the coloring by doing it multiple times. Definitely a learning curve. I did areas over until I got it somewhat better. Like a driveway paint job. 40-40. Looks good doing 40mph from 40 feet away. Outlaw Gambler
thanks for all of the input. Longhunter does not do it anymore, Turnball is too expensive. After talking with them it looks like Canoe Creek is my choice.
Sedalia Dave
If you have access to the required furnace you can do it yourself. Being as most of us are lacking a kiln there is an easier way. A Way To “Color Case Harden” At Home
