I would’ve used a band saw.  What tool would you have used?

I'd leave the barrel attached, pull the two pins to remove the upper.  Curiosity would win, dictating that it be tested as a single shot (pistol lower of course).

First, you get approval and tax stamp through ATF-NFA. Then you cut the barrel. I did mine with a hack saw, but only because I was sending it to Gemtech for them to finish and thread to their suppressor.  At 7 inch barrel length, it works fine, but this one is blowback operated, not gas operated ( 45 ACP )

I've heard of two or three people doing that.

 

"AR-15s are evil! They must be destroyed!!!"

 

So they buy an AR-15 and have themselves filmed as they're cutting it up. And the first thing they do is cut the barrel off, which immediately became a federal felony, but they are never charged because "it's a political statement".
